Hindhead Tunnel
- wolfie smith (19th Nov 2014 - 20:35:20)

Anyone know what happened tonight?

Absolute chaos and the tunnel closed at 6pm.

There was an accident on the A3 just south of the tunnel and Hindhead junction.

There were sirens local to Hindhead for over ten minutes so knew it was something bad.

Hi,
I wrote to the Highways Agency earlier in the month. I got back this reply. It basically says they installed a sub-standard power supply. They never really addressed the question about a \'contra-flow\' and I suspect that is not possible as it would add weeks to their improvement project (budget).

Thank you for contacting the Highways Agency Information Line regarding the complete closures of the Hindhead Tunnel.

I apologise for any inconvenience that you have experienced during your journeys. However, as only one power supply controls the whole Tunnel, it is necessary for both bores to be closed for safety reasons.

The current overnight weekend full closures are to make the power supply to the Tunnel’s systems, such as CCTV and air quality monitoring, even more resilient. The improvements will provide a reliable power supply which is vital for the safe operation of the Tunnel, in particular its lighting, signage and ventilation systems.

We have planned the work carefully to take place overnight at the weekend, when traffic levels are at their very lowest. For dates and times of the closures, please visit the Hindhead Tunnel Maintenance Closures pages on the Highways Agency’s website, via the following link: www.highways.gov.uk/roads/road-projects/Hindhead-Tunnel-Maintenance-Closures

It is important to view any disruption from these closures in the context of the enormous benefits that the Tunnel has brought to the economy, the environment, local people and to the thousands of drivers who use the A3 every day.

I hope this clarifies the issue.

Ahh, that is why Liphook was chocoblock last night - a stream of traffic coming from the Haslemere Road into Liphook village centre.
