Southampton FC
- John Lush (24th Apr 2009 - 13:27:00)
A random non liphook related posting but i would like to make an appeal to all football fans and believers in community...
For those who have not seen or heard, one of hampshires professional football clubs, just 45 mins away, southampton FC are in danger of folding as they are crippled with £24 million of debt. Now i know you are probably thinking 'why should i help', but this is more than football. Southampton are a family club, a big community club and they are in the same county as liphook.
It would be a disgrace to see them fold, we cannot allow the big clubs, the london and northern clubs dominate, we must keep our south coast clubs alive. I am urging anyone who is a football fan and a believer in the community to do the 45 minute drive to st marys football stadium tomorrow and go a watch the match - the ticket money could literally be the difference between folding and surviving.
Go and watch the match, it will be an amazing atmosphere and it will certainly be an experience. Please check out www.saintsfc.co.uk - donations gratefully received. Save a local club from going under. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help save my beloved club. Thanks.

Why would I want to drive for 45 mins, give it a couple of more seasons and you can pop up the Rec and watch them!
Maybe the letter should have gone to Rupert Lowe and ask him where the money went from the sale of Theo Walcott, Gareth Bale, Peter Crouch etc etc

Even as a diehard Pompey fan I can see Johns point. Having two teams in the premiership was good for Hampshire football. I was well aware of that even when we had South Coast premiership derbies. It put Hampshire on the map footballwise despite the banter/hatred between the two teams.
Everyone loves to see Aldershot do well - why not Southampton?

i didn't hear anyone coming to pompeys defence when they were in the cacky a few seasons ago! in fact the saints fans had a field day as i recall. They have only themselves to blame! From the boardroom down to the groundstaff, although i agree it will be sad if they go out of business. It needs a rich sugardaddy to save them.Someone like Harry Redknapp!

Hi John,
It is a painful process watching the demise of "your team" from where they were, actually, not so long ago. I empathise entirely. And others posting on this subject ought to remember that it can happen to any club. It seems to me that most are financially stretched, apart from an elite few with wealthy benefactors prepared to dig deep to ensure some measure of success.
I think that Soton f.c. are going to require more than just luck to survive. Whatever financial reserves they had appear to have dissappeared along with the quality players they did have.
It would be interesting to know if the holding co., now in admin. may or may not have diverted funds from the sale of players from the club coffers to itself. That would take explaining.
I personally think that the alarm bells were pealling loud and clear when Big Lawrie walked years ago.

Hi John
I took your advice and went down to St Mary's last weekend and I must say it was the most enjoyable day's football I have seen in a long time,Fast exiting end to end football played in the right spirit by skilfull players. The atmosphere was just electric. Then I suddenly realised it was sunday and I was watching Liphook junior school play in the Hampshire Schools Six A-Side Finals.
