Election Results
- Dawn Hoskins (24th Apr 2009 - 00:03:20)
Of the 6,000+ voters, 1100 turned out on the day.
Jeremy Austen-Olsen – 465
Dawn Hoskins – 363
Kay Murray – 272
Thank you to everyone that voted for me. For a newbie I didn’t do too badly.
Well done to Jeremy who is your new councillor.

Dawn,
If the candidates had been marked on the effort they put in, you would have won hands down!!
There will be a next time :)

A disappointing turn out, however, well done for your first attempt Dawn. I trust we will now see regular, informative postings on here from Mr. Osten-Olson telling us all about his efforts to keep us informed with what's going on in the parish and locality... or does, ahem, someone already do that...

Dear Dawn;
I'm very sorry you did not win the election as you were the only candidate to reach out in an attempt to have a dialogue with members of the electorate.
Don't know anything about the bloke who won as he's kept a very low profile, I assume therefore that he's the usual flat-earth tory that we get around here century after century. I wish him happy squabbling with the rest of them at the council......
Have you heard about the recent vast unnecessary expense incurred at the Allotments ?

Being slightly hard on Mr Austen-Olsen aren't we?
He doesn't exactly keep a low profile within the village, organises the annual Classic Car day for years (for charity!) among other things.
And he has posted on here occasionally - im sure he probably reads more than he posts, but theres enough petty squabbling going on here already without more contribution, perhaps Dawn's votes would have been higher if she didn't engage in this either, I know it certainly put me off voting!!

Hi Sophie
I wasn’t aware of any ill feeling or people being hard? I have been open and friendly and genuinely wished both Kay and Jeremy good luck both in person and on Liphook.co.uk
Like many people, I have never met either candidate prior to this by-election thing as I don’t have horses or attend ‘car’ days.
Also, most of the people who post here are ‘regulars’ who read all the time and post all the time. So I think that when they posted questions they were hoping that Kay and Jeremy would also chip in and give their opinion. I think that for people who didn’t know Kay or Jeremy that was important – especially in further out places like Bramshott, Conford and Passfield as we did not receive election fliers from anybody else (as far as I know).
Also, as far as petty squabbling as you put it – it is the fact there is so much of it going on within the Parish Council that made me decide to stand in the first place! In this regard I was always going to be a contentious choice as I set my stall out right at the beginning. The people that voted for me did so because they are also annoyed at the petty and childish behaviour that some people continue to display.
I like to debate issues Sophie and use this forum to do so – I cannot guarantee that other posters will not do the same – but they have just as much right to tell people what they think even if it comes across as moaning or squabbling. Getting things off your chest is cathartic and often allows other people who feel the same about a particular issue to join forces.
However, I do not think I have ever engaged in petty squabbling, and as a relative newcomer I am very impressed at how many people voted for me. There was only 100 votes in it between Jeremy and myself and when you consider that only 1000 people bothered to turn up I think that is very good.
I notice you said that you were one of those that couldn’t be bothered. That is a shame. I have been trying to talk to people to get them more ‘engaged’ in local issues and the local council - but apathy and disinterest seems to run very high in our parish – particularly in the outer areas.
I wonder if this will ever change or if we a fighting a losing battle?
I am sincere when I wish Jeremy good luck and I really do hope that he will use this forum to tell us what he is up to. We need more councillors to communicate with us directly and tell us their plans etc. I would like to see a regular “Question and Answer’ slot here but until the councillors decide that they are allowed to talk to us that is never going to happen!!

Sophie,
I'm also someone who doesn't have horses or an interest in Classic Cars, so had never heard of Mr Austen-Olsen.
I don't think it's unreasonable to want to know something more about candidates asking for our votes, rather than just the usual 'worthy' objectives listed on their fliers!! (didn't receive one from Mrs Murray at all). Taking part in debates here would have given us a chance to get to 'know' them a bit more IMO.
Dawn has been the only candidate who has regularly expressed her views on all sorts of local problems debated on this forum....so I find it quite extraordinary that her honesty and openness has prompted you not to vote at all!!
