Carnival
- Irene & Russ Ellis (9th Oct 2014 - 18:12:48)

I am just wondering why the 2 biggest club in the village namely the Football Club and the Cricket Club do not put an entry in the carnival. They want the community to support them so why don’t they support the community. Such a shame

Re: Carnival
- Susie (9th Oct 2014 - 20:42:57)

Yes, you don't need a vehicle be a walking entrant.
Or find a wheel barrow and be a push-me-pull-you.

Your Carnival needs you!

Re: Carnival
- Mee (9th Oct 2014 - 22:41:35)

Good question. I wonder where all the football club money goes?....

Re: Carnival
- dave (9th Oct 2014 - 22:43:04)

The carnival has had its day think of some think new to do ?

Re: Carnival
- Nicole S (10th Oct 2014 - 09:03:13)

I totally disagree that 'the carnival has had its time'.

The carnival is one of the highlights of the village calendar, people come from far and wide for it and it's definitely one of the best around. Whilst others have dwindled and died a slow death Liphook has stayed strong.

I used to go to the Carnival with friends whilst I was at Bohunt. Now several years later, and no longer living in the village (I still have strong ties and am involved in village activities) I come back each year, whether to take part with the group I belong to or just to wander and enjoy, meeting up with old friends from school along the way.

The carnival committee do an amazing job every year and put hours and hours into the planning, preparation and the actual day.

Long may it continue.

Dave - any positive suggestions of something new to do?

Re: Carnival
- Amy (10th Oct 2014 - 09:17:18)

I don't think the carnival had it's day either, it was a big part of my childhood with my grandparents and I'm so excited to introduce my son to it for the first time this year

Re: Carnival
- Roo (10th Oct 2014 - 12:49:38)

The carnival has been on its lastlegs for at least the 5 to 10 years the last three have taken just over 20 minutes each to pass sainsburys. And as for disruption and trouble caused and the mess left behind now is the time after a hundred plus years too move on and find something new that more people can enjoy, perhaps something in daylight hours

Re: Carnival
- wendy (10th Oct 2014 - 13:25:07)

I really don't know what the people of liphook want, they seem to like to run everything down, the hungry horse, the links, and now the carnival, I wonder if these people who do all the 'slagging off' have ever helped with anything? I doubt it.

I tried to start an antique/collector's fair, but had no response. So come on...what do you moaners want??

Re: Carnival
- Kaz (10th Oct 2014 - 13:43:31)

I don't believe the carnival has had it's day I've enjoyed for many years there are little bits that go on during the day down Bohunt the main trouble comes from the pubs I always see police down the fairground end and the football club did put in a bus a few years ago we've tried gig in the garden but that got cancelled due to noise complaints what else can the community do ??

Re: Carnival
- l (10th Oct 2014 - 14:18:55)

Mee: Please can you enlighten me on what money you are referring to for the Football Club?? Its Liphook not Man U, our players don't get paid a wage and all expenses come out of their own pockets! Apart from the brilliant sponsors they get to help cover costs!

Liphook Football Club already does a lot for the community spirit and reputation......maybe more people could support them?

Re: Carnival
- Frustrated Footballer (10th Oct 2014 - 14:34:06)

I'd like to respond to a couple of threads here.

Firstly regarding about the Football club supporting the community. How about people stop moaning about the club asking for flood lights. How about they stop moaning about the club asking for a new ground ( finally after years, we have one agreed but have no money to build it yet ) Plus when we get the new ground built, we won't have lights straight away as we have to ask permission. It's ok for the Tennis club to have them though! This has all stopped us from progressing up the leagues. If this had been allowed and the busy bodies hadn't moaned about it causing light pollution, you may of seen the club grow and progress up the leagues whilst becoming a larger team and putting liphook on the local map a bit more!

As someone has already put on this thread, we did get asked to the carnival after we had won everything in sight. We had a bus and went round with the other floats but we haven't been asked back. Believe me, if we were asked i know the players would be keen to get involved.

Also in regards to where all the money goes. As a player i can tell you we have to pay a fee at the start of the season to play. The money the club makes will go towards the costs of the season and keeping the club afloat. It's not run for free. The club has teams running from the ages of 6 all the way up to the men in in the First team! Just head down to Bohunt and ask them how much it will cost to rent the astro turf for the season once a week for 2 hours. Then ask how many of the teams rent that out and you'll get an idea of where the money goes then Mee!

Re: Carnival
- Diane (10th Oct 2014 - 16:14:02)

I dont think you have to be asked to enter the Carnival from what I remember you just entered. How sad if Liphook lost its Carnival. Please keep it going carnival Commitee.

Re: Carnival
- Kaz (10th Oct 2014 - 18:37:00)

I agree with frustrated footballer !! The football club has done a lot for the community including raising money for the peak center and other things

Re: Carnival
- Liphook united Supporter! (10th Oct 2014 - 18:56:51)

Well well well.....this is a post I definately need to state facts to....
Firstly.....community spirit...hmmm now I do believe when myself, and the majority of my family take themselves to the local COMMUNITY based football team, every week it is to support them in keeping the name LIPHOOK known. Which is the same as every year, the COMMUNITY carnival taking place and we all once again turn out to support and donate to this so called COMMUNITY! The problem is the managers and coaches already give up 1 evening and one weekend day for about 45 weeks of the year, so to ask them to organise something is probably asking a bit much of them if u ask me as they already devote many long hours to their COMMUNITY football club.

Re: Carnival
- Lucy (10th Oct 2014 - 18:59:28)

Well Wendy that's where you are wrong! Just because someone has a differeing opinion to you doesn't make them wrong or indeed unwilling to make a contribution in the community. I made a comment agreeing that the smell in the Links is very unpleasant and not something you expect when trying to enjoy a (fairly expensive) meal out. However, I also volunteered as a Brownie Leader for over 10 years and assisted with creating a carnival float with them for many years. In fact I was 5 when I took part in the carnival for the first time with the Passfield Oak many moons ago. When working at Lloyds Pharmacy in the village I delivered medication to many local residents and often went above and beyond my job role to help these customers by putting their washing on or ringing for taxis.

Probably best not to make assumptions like this as its likely to get people's backs up (ie mine).

Re: Carnival
- Community supporter (10th Oct 2014 - 19:10:50)

I am saddened that you think LUFC are not community spirited considering many mums, dads, brothers, sisters give their time every weekend for almost a year keeping the community football club alive. Are you not aware that a football game has been held every single year for as long as I can remember on the day of the carnival so it would be a little difficult to be able to get back to even enter, let alone put in the time to make the float. As a supporter of both the football club and carnival I am disappointed to hear such views from people in our community. Come on people, think logically this really is viable. Liphook.....where is your community spirit?!

Re: Carnival
- born and bred Liphook! (10th Oct 2014 - 19:15:35)

Ok...MEE, if you really want to know where the football income goes, you are more than welcome to there AGM where a detailed account sheet is given out to everyone present, so you can see for yourself where it comes from and goes to!! And how much it costs to run YOUR village football club. Also seeing as you have shown such interest I assume you are a supporter every weekend....??

Re: Carnival
- kayleigh (10th Oct 2014 - 20:08:42)

Re: Carnival
- Mac (10th Oct 2014 - 22:31:37)

Leaves are falling
Nights are drawing
Hands need warming
Gloves need finding
Excitement is bubbling
Carnivals calling
Floats need building!

Re: Carnival
- Irene & Russ Ellis (11th Oct 2014 - 12:08:12)

Well I now know all about the good people who support the football club. Not quite the answer I hoped to get but it did make me realise that you don’t understand about the carnival.
Carnival night is the one night of the year when all the roads into Liphook are cut off and all clubs, businesses, families and friends, young and old can get together dress up, hit the streets and have FUN and while doing that we can collect money which all goes to good causes in the village. But beware once you have been in the carnival you might become an addict.
. Most places have a football team but very few have carnivals which attract an average of 3,000 people from all over the country and some of them are from abroad I do hope some of you will enter into the spirit of the event and once again make it a great night and a highlight of the Liphook calendar.
One last thing. The definition of community is and I quote :- a body of people living in one place or district or country and considered as a whole.
Well lets all get going building are floats and making our costumes.
See you on the night.

Re: Carnival
- Karen Feeney (11th Oct 2014 - 15:28:39)

Dear All

I felt I had to respond to some of the points raised on this thread.

I hope that the village doesn't feel the Carnival has 'had it's day'. I think we are very fortunate to be a village that still has a Carnival and that we still have people that want to organise it and more importantly, people that want to take part. It is a night to bring the community together and to celebrate everything that is good about our village.

In response to 'Frustrated Footballer'. Nobody gets invited to join the procession. It is a case of just turning up on the night as it always has been. I believe you took part a couple of years ago as Beth from A3 Sports organised your participation. It would be great if you wanted to join us again.

I think we do need more floats and walkers to take part as the procession is getting smaller. I believe this has happened over the last few years due to financial reasons. We do need the younger generation of our village to come along and get involved. We do need more committee members and we do need more people to help on the night.

However, all the time the community continues to come out to watch and all the time we hear that we have some floats being built, the Carnival Committee will carry on ensuring that the necessary paperwork has been obtained and that all the arrangements are in place for us to have a Carnival.

We are quite unique here in this village and let's prove all those doubters wrong this year. Let's make 2014 the year when the Carnival gets its mojo back.

I am so looking forward to seeing you all on the Longmoor Road in two weeks time. We don't care if it rains, snows or hails, we will be there and we will all be smiling, socialising with our friends and neighbours and doing what Liphook has done best for the last 113 years....our Carnival.

Karen Feeney

Re: Carnival
- kev (11th Oct 2014 - 22:16:01)

Wow! Carnival does get advertised well. Lets take a look at what the issues are here! The Carnival needs support to keep it going as its a tradition that has gone on for many years, The Football club is a voluntary organisation with tradition that has gone on for many years. The carnival is organised and run by a team of volunteers and money is raised to keep it going. The Football club is organised and run by a team of volunteers for over 350+ members of the community and is open to anyone. The time that is dedicated by volunteers to the organising of the carnival once a year is hugely appreciated. As is every day of the week for 9 months that the volunteers offer the football club and the all year round job of many others involved. If the Football Club were asked about doing a float ( which they were only one week ago) and it was briefly mentioned but was probably too late to arrange for this year but was told people would be happy to do something in the future with better planning as you probably understand it takes a lot of preperation and devotion of time to do this properly and safely. Might I add the football club play at the Recreation Ground every Saturday ,mornings and afternoons so heres everyones invite that means I appreciate you may not make a game this season without decent planning but I do expect you all to be there watching in support of another of the great local organisations next year. That way everyone wins. Thats the spirit!!!
So now all we need to do is stop the bitching and support as much of all the clubs and commitees we have in the place we live in.................
All those in favour?
P.s was this circulated to the tennis club, bowling club and all other clubs commitees and groups in the area

p.p.s was this sent to all businesses in the community too?

Re: Carnival
- Lily (11th Oct 2014 - 22:52:07)

I have memories as a child watching the carnival, it was awesome. I don't remember the year or the theme but I particularly remember a whale that squirted water. If anyone has any idea who did the float is be interested to know.
I've also won a category, I was 8 and dressed as Dolly Parton. I was thrilled! My great grandfather also won in a float category "any old iron" I just love seeing the pic of him accepting his win.
I loved my bohunt years with all my friends at carnival. I loved introducing my son to it, who would want one of those obligatory neon efforts, as I did too!
People don't know what they have until it's gone. Liphook would have weird and eerie end of October should this tradition stop or fall apart.
Thanks to the committee and everyone who makes the carnival continue. I hope to see many more.

Re: Carnival
- JamesP (13th Oct 2014 - 12:57:44)

Lily - I seem to remember that whale - was it the Krazy Lads who did it? I remember them building their floats in the back garden of a house at the top of Tunbridge Crescent. It was always exciting to see the float taking shape in the days leading up to the carnival and trying to guess what it would end up as.

I was also amazed at how rapidly some of the other floats took shape. You could walk around the village and see all kinds of strange construction work on the morning of the carnival.

Re: Carnival
- Susie (13th Oct 2014 - 14:25:42)

You might this year if you are in the right place at the right time.
I just hope it all stays together all the way round!

Re: Carnival
- WOO (13th Oct 2014 - 15:11:39)

I have great memories of Liphook Carnival. I have lived on Gunns Farm all my life and we used to have an adult float and a childrens float every year - this is going back to the 1960`s when I used to be dressed up! My brother was also dressed up in the 1950`s and on a float!! - Great memories. I can still vividly remember the excitement of Carnival Day and the floats being prepared. It all happened behind the garages!

Re: Carnival
- Lucy Davis (16th Oct 2014 - 22:06:38)

Just over a week to go until carnival and we can't wait....we support the event every year: some years we have taken part and some years we are very enthusiastic crowd participants!
Thank you to all of the volunteers who make the carnival possible, not just on the night but throughout the year (especially those that clear up like little village elves very early on the Sunday morning)
We look forward to supporting the event for many years to come

Re: Carnival

Looking forward to the Carnival and hope it continues for many years. Can't believe the footballers expect to be invited to contribute a float!!

Re: Carnival
- Sue Hodgkinson (15th Feb 2015 - 16:05:10)

WOO - I have read your posting on the subject of the Carnival. I note you say you have lived on Gunns Farm all of your life and have wonderful memories of Carnival Night. I also lived on Gunns Farm, at Admers Crescent, from 1956 to 1966. In about 1956/57 my brother and I were on the Gunns Farm float called The Tuck Shop. Some of the other children were dressed as sweets and ice cream and my brother and I were dressed as customers of the Tuck Shop. I have two photos of that particular float and can name almost everyone on that Float. I remember watching the floats being prepared "behind the garages" as you say. Here are the names of the children on The Tuck Shop Float:- Me, Sue Hodgkinson, my brother, Dave Hodgkinson, Janet Martin, Kay Martin, Diane Hector, Julie Keens, Jennifer McMullan, John Gabler, Keith Gabler, Mrs Funge, Jill Goodwin, Brenda Cannon and 5 others that sadly I cannot name. One year about 1962, my sister Jan and her best friend Sue Funge entered as "Ajax and the Germ". I had made a cardboard tube for Jan and painted it with the words "Ajax Kills 99% of All Known Germs" and attached to this was a long rope at the end of which was Sue Funge, covered head to foot in pipe lagging. She was The Germ. They won their age group. Where do you live on Gunns Farm? What is your name and do we know each other? Would love to hear from you.

Re: Carnival
- Wendy (Woo being nick name!) (16th Feb 2015 - 14:04:00)

Hi Sue, I`m Wendy McMullen, I don`t personally know you but Jennifer McMullen is my sister and have two brothers Clive and John. I was born in the house in Admers Crescent in 1960 and am still there lol!!! I have asked Jen to read the comments re carnival. I know a few of the names you mentioned.

Re: Carnival
- Tanya Wilkinson (16th Feb 2015 - 17:33:47)

All the moaning and reminiscing isnt getting the problem solved. The problem being lack of floats and walkers/ bands on carnival night. May I suggest to the committe, that you contact local businesses and organisations gradually widening the circle until there are more people participating. People from outside the area may not realise they are free or able to join in, thinking it is only for Liphook people, and some businesses may get involved just for the free advertising on the night. Its a suggestion, which is far more positive than just sitting and moaning, I am sure you would welcome more positive suggestions.

Re: Carnival
- Sue (16th Feb 2015 - 21:07:10)

Woo (Wendy) - Well what a surprise! I remember you and your family very well. Please say hello to Jennifer for me, won't you? The Carnival was such a wonderful time for us children at Gunns Farm. I just loved it - the children's Float, the Adult float, all put together as you say "behind the garages" behind Admers Crescent. One of the Adult floats I remember was "Henry VIII and his 6 Wives". I organised a Reunion at the beginning of 2003 for children who grew up in Liphook, mainly Gunns Farm, went on to Mill Chase School and Jennifer was invited but declined the invitation. I would have loved to catch up with her to see how the years had been for her. The Reunion was held at The Fox and Pelican in Grayshott and there were about 30 of us, including Jill Goodwin, who I know Jen will remember. I can't believe we are all (not you) in our 60s now, when in fact we were "the girls of the 60s". What fantastic times they were. I know you are about 13/14 years younger than Jen if I remember rightly. Please pass on my regards to her. I now live in Nottinghamshire but I may consider a journey down to have a look at the old place. If I do, could I call in and say hello?
