BLACS trip to Charleston Farmhouse
- Sumi Olson (17th Apr 2009 - 11:28:08)
Date: Thursday 11th June 2009
Cost: Tickets @ £18 includes: Coach travel; Conducted house tour by experienced guides; Driver’s tip
We’ve planned an early summer coach outing to Charleston Farmhouse to appeal to and provide inspiration for all painters, gardeners & craftspeople!
Charleston Farmhouse, the former home of the Bloomsbury Group, is a beautiful old house in Firle, near Lewes & Brighton. Artists Vanessa Bell & Duncan Grant decorated the house in their unique style and it remains very much the same today as it was when they lived there in the early 1900s.
In addition to the house & artists’ garden, there’s an exhibition gallery showing an exciting mix of contemporary & historical shows, a shop selling original ceramics, textiles, & jewellery, as well as a tea room.
We’ll depart from Sainsbury’s car park in Liphook at approx. 9am. We plan to leave Charleston Farmhouse at approx. 3pm allowing ample time for the house tour, and the opportunity to look round the garden, gallery, café & gift shop.
The rooms on show form a complete example of the decorative art of the Bloomsbury artists, including murals, ceramics, paintings & textiles. The collection includes work by Renoir, Picasso, Derain, Matthew Smith, Sickert, Tomlin, & Delacroix.
There are very attractive grounds with a small lake (Charleston's walled garden was created by Vanessa Bell & Duncan Grant to designs by Roger Fry) so don’t forget to take sketch books, paints & camera to record it all for your future creative work!
Reserve places for you and your friends by contacting Irene Day, BLACS Social Secretary Tel: 01428 725417.
