Liphook Street Watch Update
- Philip Kedge (10th Apr 2009 - 13:10:46)
Dear Residents,
I would like to take this opportunity to update you about the Liphook Street Watch Scheme.
This has been successfully running for 3 months and I would like to express my significant thanks to current members who are doing their bit to support your community. Street Watch is now developing across East Hampshire and details can be found on www.street-watch.org.uk.
The Liphook scheme would love to find another 3-4 residents to join them, particularly now that the weather is getting warmer and the evenings lighter.
A small commitment of only 2 hours a month will help to transform your community. If you would like to help in making your area safer and to become empowered to tackle the issues that undermine your community, then this is a fantastic opportunity.
If interested, then please contact Street Watch on admin@street-watch.org.uk
The next Street Watch meeting is at 19.30 hrs on the 23rd April 2009 at the Millennium Hall.
Please let the Street Watch team know if you would like to attend or would like more information by contacting admin@street-watch.org.uk
Kind regards
Philip Kedge
Chief Inspector
East Hampshire District Commander

Philip,
I have just seen your note on talk back. Could you please give me an idea of what powers/authority Street Watcher have? Apart from having a normal Citizen's powers (reporting crime, acting as a deterrent, etc..) do they have any authority to do anything else?
The Street Watchers are doing a wonderful job, but they should be absolutely clear on what they can and more importantly cannot do. I look forward to hearing from you in due course.
Mani

Dear Mani,
You are correct, Street Watch members have no specific powers other than what the law provides for all citizens. This is absolutely correct as Street Watch members do not need powers.
Street Watch is all about being a good citizen, providing visible reassurance, reducing the fear of crime, and where appropriate to help tackle the issues that undermine our communities.
Do not underestimate the 'power' of a cohesive community that unites to regain ownership of our open spaces. This form of community empowerment is in real terms more sustainable than what we can deliver on our own as police.
Please visit www.street-watch.org.uk for more information.
Regards
Phil Kedge. District Commander - East Hampshire.

Will 'Street Watch' become 'Swine Watch'?

This is symptomatic of the problem. Eejits out late at night, possibly fuelled on inexpensive alcohol supplied by who knows, The fact is that there is no deterent to dissuede them from behaving so, and never has been for 16 years or more. In spring of 1993, a gentleman who lived in Portsmouth Rd, just north of the Jet Station, came off the late night train from Guildford and was stabbed in the thigh by a young lad who, as he explained to the court, had bought a knife on the day and wanted to see what he could do with it!
The chap who was stabbed made a full recovery, the youngster responsible is, I am told, a reformed character and a well respected tradesman within the local building industry.
My point is; The Whitehill constabulary have the history of this and countless other incidents centred around Station Rd and, in particular, the railway station. So why is it not a priority for them to provide a presence regularly at what is a crime hotspot

Allan
You, I and many others on here have said exactly the same about the lack of police presence around the Station. Why - if the police are so quick to promote 'streetwatch' here, can they not respond to the question most of the population want answers and a visible force. I accept that Streetwatch will not cover this area of crime, and I certainly do not blame any who are ordinary citizens not wishing to patrol that area at the bad times - so surely the person responsible in doing something is Mr Kedge!!
