Population

Any one know how to find out what the population of Bramshott and Liphook was in 1962 ?

find the census before and after 1962.
That's a start.

The Heritage Centre might have that information tucked away somewhere - they have lots of little gems!

The old AA handbooks used to have population of each town listed. I have a vague memory of Liphook's population being about 8000 in the 60's.

Just thought - the electoral role would give an indication of people of voting age.

I understand Stacey, but that would tell you how many adults lived here in the 1960's if you couldn't find anything else by way of the census or anything else it would at least be a guide.
anyway - only trying to help!

The electoral roll is only for adults who may want to vote this year.
Even if you could find somewhere, electoral records for 1962, then it would be only a snapshot of those people who had bothered to record their names on the electors roll. It is not obligatory, and nowadays, one can opt out of having ones name appear on it, and remain a private psrson. It would not be practical to base a population count on people who may or may not have been on this. Plus, I do not think the total count of electors appears on the electoral records. Where would you send someone to find the 1962 electoral roll anyway?

How can such a harmless query turn into this type of confrontational thread?
Stacey, do you have a beef with Dawn? the tone of your postings seems rather aggressive and confrontational, she was just trying to help

NO beef I think that I was only trying to point out she seems to be giving out the wrong information to people who come on here asking for help. They do not need to be sent on fruitless quests. I was pointing out that the current electoral rolls help search for an individuals name and address only , as it is all in street order. It does not have a population total attached. I also imaginge finding those same records from the sixties somewhere, Where? would be equally pointless, if there is no total population attached.

You would need to look at records held in the National Archives at Kew.
Some have been indexed and are available online. Go to the National Archives website and check it out.
The closest statistic for 1962 population of Liphook that you are likely to find is the 1961 census.
