A3 Roundabout at Liss
- Finchie (6th Apr 2009 - 22:56:10)

Anyone close to the A3 Hindhead Tunnel planning ?

As I crossed the new roundabout installed over a weekend (just south of Hindhead) it got me thinking - isn't it amazing what you can build in 24 hours when there is a focus ! Not only that ...

Do you know whether there are any plans to remove the roundabout at Liss? If not, is there a danger that the Hindhead bottleneck just moves down the A3 to the Liss roundabout ?

I assume the road traffic planners are well ahead of the game and we will see an underpass and junction in place of the current roundabout !

Appreciate some feedback as I am losing sleep over this important matter (as well as losing sleep over the fact that the new road surface on the Headly road doesn't seem as smooth as other "new" roads I have seen - I am convinced that when there is a bad frost next winter, the gaps between the larger stones used will degrade the surface quickly - I now spend my driving time obsessing with the road surface - I think I need help).

Cheers, Finchie

I remember being told years ago that the removal of Ham Barn Roundabout at Liss and replacement with an underpass depended on a cold and somewhat mystifying statistic.

If the roundabout resulted in 2.5 deaths then work would commence.

18.1 Before the completion of the A3 Hindhead Scheme, Hampshire County Council will be raising the issue of the Ham Barn roundabout junction with the B3006 (south of Hindhead and north of Petersfield) with the Highways Agency. Currently, Ham Barn roundabout is the only remaining `at-grade' roundabout to cause an obstruction to traffic travelling on the A3 south of London to the A3/ M27 junction at Farlington. Although Ham Barn roundabout is not part of the published scheme, Hampshire County Council will wish to pursue with the Highways Agency the future of Ham Barn roundabout and options for upgrading.

6. In addition the Secretary of State and the HA are advised that the District Council considers that, in the interests of highway safety, proposals should be brought forward urgently for the replacement of the Ham Barn roundabout with a grade separated junction and that such a junction should be constructed before the A3 Hindhead project is completed.

I wonder what would constitute .5 of a death?
