A Bargain in Station Road
- Paul Robinson (6th Apr 2009 - 20:22:28)

Now thats what I call an initiative!

The wine shop in Station Road are doing a 3 litre wine box for £9.99!

A Shiraz Cabernet from South East Australia and at 13.5%vol it is, as Finchie would say, very quaffable.

Come to think of it, how come Finchie has not told us about this bargain? Could it be that he thought to corner the market?

I think we should be told!

I had not seen this offer but I am just getting my coat ....

Even more remarkable when you consider that duty and VAT account for £7.60 of this.

That leaves 59p per bottle for the producer, the wholesaler, the merchant (general wine) and the shipper who moved it halfway round the earth!

That got me checking the maths.

VAT on 9.99 = £ 1.30

Duty on wine = £209.82 / hectolitre (100 litres)

So duty on 3 litres = £ 6.29

Gross profit = 9.99 - 1.30 - 6.29 = £ 2.40 per box.

So, 80p per litre to cover cost of wine, packaging, shipping and profit - amazing !

That why these items are generally called 'loss leaders'
