St George's Day
- Eneida (6th Apr 2009 - 15:02:22)

Will there be any events and jollifications going on in Liphook to celebrate England's patron saint? (apart from bye election )

I think there should be and also agree with that Archbishop (can't remember his name) that it should be a national holiday!! After all the Scots, Welsh and Irish celebrate their saints very well indeed.

Let's have lots of flags flying and 'Maurice' ;) dancing on The Green to cheer us all up!!

[Editor - soon to appear on the events list ...
Thursday 23rd April - ST GEORGES DAY at The Links - Sausage & Ale festival 14 varieties of Sausages and 6 different Ales]

What on earth is the connection between St.George and sausages? Unless one of the varieties is "Dragon".

With one deft swing of his might sword, good St George slayed the evil, foul smelling, fire-breathing sausage.

...makes the legend more accessible to children of a nervous disposition.

I'd sooner it was 14 different ales and 6 styles of sausage....

Its not celebrated because George was Turkish and never came near England? Hardly going to light any patriotric fervour.

Well it doesn't really matter that St George was Turkish and never visited England....he never visited Rio de Janeiro either, but he's still their patron saint and they have a holiday and a jolly good party in his honour. No sausages involved, as far as I know, but plenty of caipirinhas :D

Anyway, it's supposed to be a celebration of England and it's history as a country, which IMO people should be proud of, instead of forever apologising in case they're upsetting others.

Where sausages meet Brazillians. It should be one hell of a party :-)

I'm bursting with pride already !

Cheers, Finchie

Claire,

Could you explain your rather bizarre comment about Brazilians....I'm just curious to know why 192 M people can't be mentioned on a website in Liphook ;)

[editor - I suspect she was not referring to the people who live in Brazil - but maybe waxing]
