Citizens Advice Desk
- Alex Cameron (5th Aug 2004 - 15:19:48)

Surely some mistake? Ahaa no. This post is going to be a whinge i'm afraid (wow, thats something new).

I don't want to criticise the staff who man the CAB centre in Liphook as i'm sure they do a sterling job, but who on earth thought an office consisting of one desk would be sufficient in a town of 29,000 people?

Clearly 1 person with a moderately serious problem is going to block-book an advisor for a whole day (this was my problem recently), and when it's only open from 10am - 1pm every day, how are you supposed to get advice without driving miles away to somewhere else?

On the positive side though, at least it's well decorated. The CAB where i used to live in East London looked like it had been bombed.

29,000 !! Gosh Alex, people have been busy.

When I moved here in 2001 I was told it was about 8,000. Must be something in the water!

When I was a kid it was 3000

I'm quoting Freddie there actually - 29 may be inaccurate, but i have no doubt he said the latest census figures put us in the late 20s (25-30k).

Alex is probably correct, or it may seem like 29000 and they were all queuing to get through the traffic lights on the Headley Rd. I did look out for Mr. Paul Robinson I bet he was in there somewhere!

If both of you and especially Freddie say the population of Liphook is about 29,000 of course I'll believe you...but I am a bit confused because HCC say it's 8,235 - seems a big difference of opinion.

In defence of their work and the CAB people. They do a great job in Liphook. As a Parish Councillor, I see some of what they often have to deal with in the office. Without their efforts - and remember that some of them are unpaid volunteers, who undergo extensive training in their own time - Liphook's residents would be the poorer.

The Parish Council pays a substantial sum (in excess of £5,000) a year to get the CAB to run here. The rest is paid by CAB. Our Liphook office is a satellite from Petersfield main office.

I didn't mean to criticise the CAB staff (i've never met any of them), my question was whether the CAB is another example of village growth outstripping local resources, in the same vein as electricity, water etc.

Sure we're big enough now to have our own office and not just be a 'satellite'?

Btw Freddie - is it 29,000?
