sign posts in Liphook
- kathryn (5th Aug 2004 - 08:03:46)
I went for a walk last night around Liphook town centre including Sainsburys, the village green and Station Road areas amongst others. I could not believe the number of sign posts that have sprung up over the past few days with many more to come! They are so over the top it's unbelievable - you can see at least 6 within a 25metre point in some places - all showing cycle path routes, where to cross the road ( a bit obvious really as there are the "rumble strips" in the pavement, and even more unbelievable one immediately outside the Millennium Centre pointing to it saying Millennium Centre when in fact there is a massive sign on the outside of the building. Additionally, there is one by the Sainsbury roundabout pointing to it saying "food store". I ask you, is it really necessary, are we all so incable of using our own initiative? I expect these will all be dug up in 12 months as soon as someone walks in to one of them and injures themselves! Surely the money could have been better spent on something else like a street cleaner for example? I am sure the residents would prefer litter free streets than a forest of posts? I await your comments with interest, thanks.

Couldn't agree more, the one that tickles me is the one directly outside, and pointing away from, Somerfield supermarket saying "Foodstore".

Has anyone noticed that the signpost on the road between Whitehill and Passfield points to 'LIPOOK'
Some mistake surely?

They're breeding again. Take a look down Huron Drive / Canada way - it's the Liphook bid for the 2010 Winter Olympics - Giant Slalom course is now in place.
Seriously, who expects these myriad of cyclists to obediently dismount their cycles in order to cross the two least busy roads in Liphook? Especially if these are the same people who desecrate ornamental balls and young trees.
And what, pray, do they do at the roundabout at the end of Canada Way? It proclaims "End of Route" everywhere you look. Is this Nirvana, or just the end of the Slalom course?

The street furniture (yes, that's the language used by Hampshire County Council) is awful in Liphook. It's a sick joke. Unfortunately the Parish Council has no say in all this.
rgds to all here - and it's nice to be back online.

I find the new 'Cyclists Dismount' signs either side of tiny roads like Huron Close very helpful. I would never have thought of dismounting my bike and walking across every side-road without them. Indeed - staggeringly irresponsible as it may seem - I might even have been cycling in the roadway rather than flattening pedestrians.
I'm particularly relieved to see that they have provided not two but four signs for each crossing - one on each side of the pavement (sorry - cycleway) on both sides of the road. It would have been very easy to miss just one enormous grey post, but two you can hardly miss (literally, unless you can steer very well).
Aside from blocking half the pavement and being a complete eyesore, I think they will be a major contribution to road safety.
Five pounds for the first person to spot someone actually dismounting from a bike and walking across the road as a result of these signs.

I would love to see a sign that says 'cyclists remount'.

Well, well, well, Liphook must have failed in it's bid for the 2010 winter olympics as the giant slalom poles appear to have come down. No 'cyclists remount' signs ever appeared, to my knowledge.
Assuming this is permanent, a number of questions now remain.
1) How much did it cost to erect the signs in the first place?
2) Who paid to have them put up?
3) Who paid to have them taken down?
4) Where does the person who made the decision to erect them work now?
Maybe Freddie can give us some clues
