Fabuliss story supplied by 2 Parish Councillors
- Dawn Hoskins (31st Mar 2009 - 11:05:20)

At the Parish Council AGM last night, Mr and Mrs Bryant from Fabuliss announced that the Press Complaints Commission and The Mail had confirmed that the story which resulted in Mr Bryant being stalked outside his house and ‘outed’ was given by TWO PARISH COUNCILLORS and two members of the public.

This is a disgrace.

If like me you think that this behaviour was beneath contempt you can write to the Standards Committee to ask for an investigation into the actions of these persons.

I think that the person to write to (in order to request this) is Joanna Gabell who is the monitoring Officer at East Hampshire District Council.

I suppose it's no more contemptable than claiming for porn films on your expenses and the MP who did this will no doubt keep her job. Let's not be too judgemental here as Fabuliss received an awful lot of invited publicity for what they do. You have to take the rough with the smooth.

But it wasn’t the MP that did that – but her husband. In this case it was actual parish councillors that dished out a salacious story to the press, who as a result stalked that poor man and harassed him for days. His life was turned upside down as a direct result of their actions. I’m sorry but you cannot say that this was ‘invited’.

Oh God, here we go again!

Please let's not start this argument again.

I thought the group wanted privacy for their members (so to speak) but they are now advertising their gatherings on the Local News section of this website so presumably they do want the publicity and, as they charge you £6 to go and join their parties, presumably they want the money aswell.

I thought we had covered all the angles of this story a few months ago.

Re: Fabuliss story supplied by 2 Parish Councillors
- Linda (31st Mar 2009 - 14:47:09)

I would please ask that people do not get upset again about Fabuliss. Dawn has posted on here because at last night's Parish meeting I asked a legitimate question which was to ask which two councillors spoke to the Daily Mail. As no one owned up I will find out another way and I will find out.

End of discussion, our fight, our problem.

Karen, the reason we have posted our May evening to welcome openhearted people to join us is to help build bridges with the community. Yes we are charging £6.00, everyone pays £6.00. The hall and expenses have to be paid for. We are not profit making.

After May our parties will remain private, the Daily Mail has forced us into the public eye and although we do not have to justify ourselves an open night will help people understand.

People have a choice, come and meet us or leave us alone, we would prefer you all to come and meet us.

I think the point being made here is should Parish Councillors be in the business of 'outing' people to the national press and causing them enormous embarrassment, just because, presumably, they don't agree with their life style, even though they're not doing anything illegal or harming anybody?

In my opinion, for what it's worth, they shouldn't.

And Karen freedom of speech is one of the few 'freedoms' we still have left in this country....just about, as long as it's nothing to do with coloured people, gays or a certain religion....so if people wish to post on this thread they don't need anybody's permission except the Editors.

Oh, so the husband submitted the expense claim...

Re: Fabuliss story supplied by 2 Parish Councillors
- Karen (31st Mar 2009 - 16:43:41)

Sorry missing the point here Enedia, why are you directing that comment about Freedom of Speech at me?

I was merely suggesting that this thread ran its course a while back and if Linda and Mark want to pursue the subject that is up to them, but we surely said all there was to say a while back.

Linda, totally understand your reasons for hosting a party in May and good luck to you. I hope you have a fab evening and that lots of people come and support your event. You will probably get more than I will for the Carnival Quiz!!!

Are you coming Karen ? It would be a good night out and, anyway, I'd like to actually put faces to the names of all the nice & supportive people like youself that regularly appear on this blog.

And if, like me, you like shoes then I guarantee you won't leave the hall !! (because I've seen some of the shoes that the particular company we've chosen will have on display ...... and, yes, they are primarily womens sizes ...... before anyone asks !!!!)

Linda Bryant of Fabuliss (born ... and still ,,,,,, FEMALE)

Yes Karen, I can see that you've entirely missed the point and so has Mrs. Bryant.

As I see it, this thread wasn't about Fabuliss at all....they were just the ones that happened to be used....but about the behaviour of the 2 Councillors involved.

However, in view of all the bad behaviour going on in this country from those that rule over us, from the top down, I suppose it's pretty small beer and nobody gives a stuff anymore....let's all go and look at exciting shoes instead ;)

Ooooohhhhh
A shoes and handbags evening....
I'm in!!!

When is it?

Above link is the Hampshire Association of Local Councils website's section on Code of Conduct for Parish Councillors.

A useful document for prospective and elected parish councillors in this climate of dodgy expense claims, furore over designated parking spaces and providing tabloid fodder to the media...

BTW - Chris, I think it was the husband who put in the claim under the (overpaid) hat of Parliamentary Asst to his wife. Clearly they have no shame whether it's adult movies or an 88p bath-plug, it's all the same as long as the tax-payers coughs up the money!

Hi Karen,
No this has not been covered before.

The first time this was discussed the debate was about the group itself, why they were there, when they were there and whether they should be there etc..

This is an entirely different matter. This is Parish Councillors dishing out stories to the press.

When Linda asked these 2 councillors to 'own up' the entire row just sat there stoney faced. It would seem that they are big enough to spill the gossip but not big enough to face the consequences of their actions.

The ones who didn't do it - must surely know the ones who did. They should not be protected.

Re: Fabuliss story supplied by 2 Parish Councillors
- Robert Douglas (1st Apr 2009 - 16:52:23)

If you rule out the ones who attend Fabuliss meetings, who would presumably have no interest in "spilling the beans", who does that leave?

Re: Fabuliss story supplied by 2 Parish Councillors
- Barbara E (1st Apr 2009 - 19:19:18)

I agree with you in principle Dawn but unfortunately obviously do not have concrete evidence only suspicions about who it was so did not feel able to publicly accuse the 2 people of this. It is not a question of protecting them, as and when definite proof comes to light from the press complaints commissision, then is the time to go into action, as I personally believe that there should be some protection against releasing information under the terms of the data protection act. No one gave them permission to pass on names and address of people who had booked the millenium Hall. Would they have passed on the names of people who were holding private parties eg a teenage girls party? I think not. Just to put peoples minds at rest it was not me. I was not even aware this was going on until too late, and a statement had already gone out.

Also, there are no real expenses that Parish councillors can claim, I only know of two, which is, a petrol allowance when one is deputised to go on parish council business outside of Liphook, which would not be very often, and which is the normal 40p per mile or so. No meeting is further away than Petersfield. the other one I believe is Chairmans expenses and I am not sure when or how much that is to be claimed. The district and County Councillors do all get allowances I am not sure how much, and I am sure that now under the freedom of information act one could find out. It is certainly not in the realms of the MP's allowances!

Re: Fabuliss story supplied by 2 Parish Councillors
- Chris (2nd Apr 2009 - 09:04:57)

I don't think anyone has any interest in or concern about Parish Council expense claims unless you all start claiming for second houses and dubious television subscriptions.

I may be wrong but a lot of people reading all this may be wondering why on earth existing and prospective Council members are wasting so much time and mental energy worrying about the emotional stability of Fabuliss? They are hardly a key feature of the well-being of our parish community especially as before a month or so ago no-one even knew they existed.

I have a nagging suspicion that there are much higher local priorities to contend with (perhaps not including handbag and shoe procurement which is only marginally essential as we strive to rebuild our shattered economy).

Re: Fabuliss story supplied by 2 Parish Councillors
- Dawn Hoskins (2nd Apr 2009 - 09:27:00)

I spoke at length to Joanna Gabell, the Standards Monitoring Officer at EHDC. Although she agreed that such behaviour throws the reputation of the whole council into disrepute – she is only able to act when she has a specific name(s) to go on.

We agreed that this leaves the victim of any inappropriate action completely alone in their fight to find the truth, which is unfair, however there is nothing that she can do about this.

So, the only option left is to write to Dr John Tough - the chairman of the Parish Council (via the clerk to The Haskell Centre, Midhurst Road, Liphook, Hants, GU30 7TN) to:
• make an official complaint that standards have been broken by two councillors;
• ask what they will be doing to uncover the identity of the wrongdoers and
• ask what will happen to the wrongdoers once identified as the guilty parties.

It seems unacceptable to me that the ‘employer’ so to speak, cannot investigate this behaviour until the aggrieved party has found out all the information on their behalf. It could take a long time for the Press Complaints Commission to get this info under the Freedom of Information Act, and meanwhile we know that we have councillors of disrepute representing us.

The wheels of bureaucracy grind very slowly.

This has nothing to do with the emotional stability of Fabuliss.

Nothing whatsoever.

This is about the reprehensible behaviour of Parish councillors, who have given interviews to The Mail.
