Cyclists ignoring red lights
- jo (18th Aug 2014 - 15:46:01)

On more than one occasion over the last week I have seen cyclists ignoring the red signals at the lights controlling the Haslemere/Highfield road junction and the railway bridge.

If this continues it will not be long until there is an accident and a cyclist injured, not to mention a damaged vehicle.

Cyclists, the lights are there for all road users, obey them.

Well said cyclists are the first to complain that us drivers are not courteous to them and don't obey the road laws ,,,see how this is taken by the ramblers ,sorry cyclists

I had a whole group of cyclist nearly sprawled across my bonnet yesterday as I turned towards Highfield Lane from Haslemere Road at the lights
If I hadn't been aware they were around then a couple of them would have been under the car as I understood there was a cycle event taking place at Bohunt School, but if they all rode like that then I suspect not many of them reached the end!
If anyone knows the organisers then a quiet word in their ear to pass on the message to some of their riders wouldn't go amiss.
One law for (some) cyclists and one for the rest of us it appeared yesterday.

i couldnt believe that at 6.30 pm on a weekday there was a cycle race on the a3 from ham barn roundabout through to liphook. How stupid! it caused mayhem, why on earth do cyclists think this is ok?

'Well said cyclists are the first to complain that us drivers are not courteous to them and don't obey the road laws '

Possibly because a car behaving discourteously around a cyclist can result in either serious injury or death of the cyclist.

If a cyclist chooses to use the road in a dangerous manner then they are only usually putting themselves at risk.

Re: Cyclists on the A3; Yes I have noticed them before. I know motorists like to be under the misapprehension that they own the roads but surely you can co-exist on a dual carriageway with plenty of room to overtake?

Don't get me started about them using the a3 as a race track, I nearly had one on my bonnet coming off the slip road. They make me so so mad as my children will testifi :-(

Can never work out why the a3 is used for this but as it is more and more getting popular we will have to get used to it .Think the old a3 would be better as quieter sure someone will tell us why?

It's not just the cyclists ignoring the red light. For some bizarre reason drivers seem to think its ok to jump red lights or ignore them when they are temporary. I nearly had a head on at the bridge leaving the village when someone came through on a red then moments later I turned right into Highfield Lane and it nearly happened again only this time they had to stop and suffer the embarrassment of turning right towards Haslemere when this evidently wasn't their intention. I know its a pain in the rear but we all have to put up with the inconvenience and saving a minute or two isn't worth getting injured for.

I am sure when i did my cycling proficiency 25 years ago we were taught that you should cycle single file on the roads not side by side or three/four abreast!!!

Chris - I know what you mean about drivers jumping the red lights but I am pretty sure the timing is out on the lights. I found myself getting angry with a driver just as you did only to find myself coming back towards Liphook the next day, as i was passing the lights they went yellow, I drove under the bridge to be welcomed by a few hand signals and as i checked my mirror the lights were already green!!

Just a mention to all cyclists, had a great ride back from Milland and cycled the road that goes past Hollycombe, normally it's a bit hairy, but was virtually traffic free due to the diversion, really worth doing if you get the chance, good hill and nice surroundings, won't get the chance again.

As for those traffic lights on Haslemere Road, be patient.
