Street Watch???!!!
- Sue W (22nd Mar 2009 - 17:49:06)

Does this really work? Is this making our streets safer? Will People be better protected?

NO!!!!

Just ask the question, what happened in Newtown on Saturday night. For reasons not to upset the family (i wont give details) of the poor person badly beaten - to within inches of his life, whom I have had close contact with recently.......... you failed!!

wake up - you are not the protectors of the community - nor are the police, all I will say is best of luck to the family and hope he recovers quickly

I do hope that the police were called and that the perpetrators will be relentlessly pursued and punished.

can someone tell us what happened without naming names.
Was it the yobs outside the station?

- barbara e (23rd Mar 2009 - 12:29:24)

Sue I thought you were not going to post on this website again? Crime is a sad symptom of our society and the attack was not the fault of Streetwatch. They are not a replacement for the police. Possibly unpaid volunteers have the right to pick and choose when they join the patrols. Do you volunteer to join them? is crime any better/ worse in the BordonWhitehill area where you live? Do you post on the Bordon Website when there are crimes over there? You say you do not work in the shop anymore, and you do not live liphook, do you not think you are antagonising your husband's customers who live in Liphook and read this website?

Re: Street Watch???!!!
- Karen (23rd Mar 2009 - 13:49:24)

Sorry, but I agree with Barbara, Sue your posting is completely ridiculous and has made me very angry. Street Watch did not fail, they never claimed to be the 'Protectors of the People', if that is what you think you have really missed the point.

Re: Street Watch???!!!
- Dave McGrath (23rd Mar 2009 - 15:30:15)

The plain truth is that if these yobs knew that there was a proper police presence and regular patrols in the village, then they would know that there was a fair chance of getting caught!!!

Take a look at our council tax bills and see how much the police are costing us. For what is what i want to know! I have been a victim of theft from my garden at least 5 times and had 3 vehicles broken into very recently, the police don't want to know. They just give you a crime number for your insurance.

My sympathy lies with the victim of this assault, but sadly don't hold your breath about the yobs being found.

Barbara

The street watch did not cause the incident - but from the word go - I had serious reservations and this just highlights its problems - would any street watcher have been able to stop this? Are they trained in this sort of thing? Would a woman over 60 and a jacket be of any help?. There have been reports of numerous vans having contents stolen, a car in Station road damaged and tyres slashed, golf clubs stolen, windows smashed and goods taken from shops etc. The message that we have a street patrol just hasn't reached the perpetrators of these incidents and I suspect future one too.

Perhaps they need more help with advertising and some successes to plaster here and over the press. Could there be some funding from the PC to help them, like supplying body suits - I would be more than willing to help raise money - to offer protection to those who have none. That is what makes me so against this scheme - send out individuals on our streets with a jacket, and at best a clipboard. Do they have torches - if not we could help in someway with that too!
The station road area, square and Sainsbury’s are known trouble spots, on certain days, at certain times exactly when this happened - why is there no proper Police presence on those evenings - if nothing else.

Re: Street Watch???!!!
- Barry Hope (23rd Mar 2009 - 20:38:49)

I agree totally with Karen and Barbara. I understand completely Sue W's rage but it is totally and absolutely unfair and unacceptable to lay the blame for this at the door of Street Watch. That was never what they were about and if Sue had been listening to all the posts when it was set up or attended any of the meetings she would understand this.

Please do not put down the Street Watch members. They are admirably trying their best to make some difference in some areas but are really unable to eradicated violent crime. I applaud the people who give up their time to walk the streets; at least they are prepared to do something instead of just blaming everyone else for the ills of society.

Re: Street Watch???!!!
- Paul R (23rd Mar 2009 - 23:32:16)

Does this have anything to do with 4 males, silver 51-plate hatchback, as seen in Sainsbury's car-park at 8.00pm Saturday?

And an incident there, that took place less than 20 feet from the 4 Streetwatch members who were facing the other way, putting on their yellow jackets?

Re: Street Watch???!!!
- Chris (24th Mar 2009 - 09:10:38)

It is a desperate situation that our fairly crime-free area of the world seems to be becoming worse and worse. This incident no doubt involved perpetrators who do not live in Liphook who have now crawled back under the stone of their miserable existence and will probably not be caught. The station area has been a focal point for a number (most) of the instances of violent crime that have occured in Liphook so why oh why are there no CCTV cameras prominant there and further afield??? This is an incident that the police cannot afford to ignore! Complacency will only invite incitement of similar crimes. Perhaps the Parish Council can lobby to get some positive action to catch the b******s who did this.

Street watch is not a substitute for the police and preventing violent crime is not their remit. The reputation of the real police and their effectiveness at preventing crimes like this hangs in the balance if they do not do something to catch the low life scum that do this kind of thing. If there was CCTV in the area then they would know who these people are and the job of catching and punishing them would be made much easier.

Re: Street Watch???!!!
- Sue w (24th Mar 2009 - 09:31:24)

Dear All

Please confirm then exactly what street watch is all about?

From the postings, which I did take part, was an initiative set up by the police to make our streets a safer place to be - houses and property better protected and be an obvious presence to deter criminality petty or otherwise.

Perhaps I am mistaken in the fact that so far the only comment placed here is that they talk to the younger community on the street to try to break down the barrier of mistrust in both generations - IMO a very good idea.

The Deputy Inspector clearly states that the community are the ones to help the community and we should not rely on the Police - because they are dealing with higher crime areas.
I honestly believe that what has been happening here, the trouble caused in certain areas, and this incident raises the fact that the problems here are just as much needed with a Police presence than anywhere.

I for one just do not have any confidence in this system.

Dave, You are so right in your comments - the Station/Newtown area, Sainsbury’s and the square are commonly acknowledged by large numbers of residents to be hot spots, and on certain days, at certain times it is worse. This incident fits exactly within this umbrella. If only there was a Police patrol active here when its needed it would soon send out the right message.

Re: Street Watch???!!!
- barbara (24th Mar 2009 - 12:47:01)

I think you are still under a misapprehension Sue. The streetwatch was not set up by the Parish Council in any way. It was a group of volunteers who want to help do something. It is a very sneering attitude, and very easy to critisize. You constantly belittle Liphook, the parish council etc when we are mostly volunteers. What are you actually doing to help? You ask for money for streetwatch from the Parish Council, would you donate money to them without wanting sponsorship of Liphook hardware in return? All I hear from you is critisism or whinging we do not spend our money in your husband's shop, or Newtown road is a bad area. Why not set up shop in Haslemere if we are so trouble ridden here?. Crime even happens there. The area around your husbands shop is the only patch of Liphook you care about, or denegrating Sainsburys, as they give competition to the hardware shop. We are in a recession- obviously that brings more crime along with it.

It seems to me that instead of posting personal insults you should be using this page to lobby councillors to persuade the police that streetwatch in this case would have been a waste of time. As i said before it needs proper police ( not only psa's) to properly patrol the streets on a regular basis not just when the mood takes them! Whilst i applaud the streetwatch scheme i think it is just a cop out (if you will pardon the pun!) by the police as a cheap way of policing our village.Get lobbying!!!

i agree with you dave too many of these posts end up being personal,i really dont think this is the idea of the website.

Re: Street Watch???!!!
- Sue W (24th Mar 2009 - 19:59:57)

I am pleased to read the content of Barbara’s last post - with all the inaccuracies and sentiment that speaks volumes! (but it did make I laugh!)

In all the postings, which support street watch, none have expressed any sympathy to the person or support for the family, or try to resolve the situation, so it doesn’t happen again.

How will Liphook ever move forward, create a better all round feel good factor, with ample shops, facilities and safety: all the time Councillors fight amongst themselves and disregard the opinions of others, as only the opinion of one.

Did they deposit containers full of sand to the Harry Haskell Centre?

This post has turned into a slanging match!!

Come on folks.......get a grip

My heart goes out to the family of the young man who was so savagely beaten in Liphook.

I am sure we all wish him a speedy recovery. We live in a world which is ailing spiritually and now that sickness has been brought to the heart of our community.

Re: Street Watch???!!!
- Allan (29th Mar 2009 - 03:17:22)

Didn't really want to add to this; however, please consider that this is not new news. 16 years ago, a resident of Portsmouth Rd came off his late night train and was stabbed in the thigh by a young man who had just bought a knife and wanted to see what damage he could inflict.
Police then were more aware of the problem surrounding Liphook station and square than it appears they are now. Why both areas are not closely monitored by our local police is a mystery considering the history.
