Any computer buffs out there - free advice needed PLEASE!
- DML (13th Jul 2014 - 21:15:17)
I know I should go to a computer shop but I'm frightened they'll charge me a fortune and I just want to know what my option are.
I work at home on my pc and if it goes worng i'm in trouble
And it's gone wrong.
It's running Windows XP and I know I'm on borrowed time, as apart from the browser not being supported anymore (whatever that means) it also get hot and I've already paid 2 lots of £70 to a pc shop to get it going when it gave up the ghost a couple times.
So I bought myself a new Dell with windows 8.1 so it would be ready for when this one dies. But that wont work either.
It's driving me nuts. Sometimes it connects to the internet, sometimes it doesn't. And it won't shut down, it will only sleep. It's not my internet because I take the cable out of the new Dell and plug it straight in the old XP and off we go. The internet is fine.
So the old XP is now throwing up random error messages and telling me my browser is old and unsupported and I know its about to croak, and the new one just wont play ball.
Someone said their husband had paid £40 to get their XP upgraded to Windows 7. Is that even an option? Sounds very cheap to me.
I am on the verge of chucking both of them out the window but I need my job so HELP anyone?? suggestions as to where I can go and what I ask them to do when I get there and what size of mortgage I'll need to take out to pay for it. And please don't suggest ringing Dells support line - I tried that and if I was losing the will to live before I rang I was well past it after an hour and a half being transferred halfway round the world and trying to get the bloke to understand me.
I hate computers!!!

If you have a new Dell then you should be able to get some support from Dell to help you resolve the issues. Failing that, contact the retailer who sold you the machine.

Thanks for all your advice. I'm going to have a look at the links Z recommended first, then I might well be in touch with you Simon if it looks to techincal. And Pauk - I totally agree with you. I always thought an upgrade should be an improvement but how they can say Windows 8.1 is easier to use than XP I really don't know.

Try plugging the cable in to the new dell and doing an ipconfig release/renew at the command prompt.
C:\> ipconfig /release
C:\> ipconfig /renew
This will reset the ip address on the new dell.
Also check that the wifi Is off on the dell if it has it installed, it could be conflicting with the LAN cable.
