£200,000 for Petersfield Train Station development
- Nicola (10th Jul 2014 - 16:33:47)

hants.gov.uk - Petersfield station area to get £200,000 facelift

Great for Petersfield.
Shame Liphook is still not accessible for all.

Is there anything we can do about liphook station?

I'm disabled my self and can't climb stairs..especially with a pushchair.. It totally stops me leaving the village as I don't drive..

So frustrating!

Totally agree.
Liphook station is a disgrace as far as access is concerned. I know a large percentage of Liphook commuters choose to drive to Haslemere because of the more frequent service, manned station and lifts for those unable to do stairs (including those with babies as well as those with disability).

However, if your disability means you are also a non-driver you are stuffed as there is no public transport to Haslemere station without taking a 2 hour trip to get there via Bordon and waiting for the connecting buses etc. It is possible but it is a complete pain. In today's age for parents of young children and those with disabilities to have such problems getting off a train is a complete and utter disgrace. Especially when it is unmanned and you are alone and struggling.

However, it is only going to get fixed when a few million quid is spare and whilst footfall switches from Liphook to Haslemere it only goes to show that the money is not warranted on a little station with low profit base. they don't even make money on the car park really as so many park on the roadside since they put up their prices.

If you are registered disabled (which to all effects these days means if you are in receipt of DLA or PIP) then providing you book your journey in advance via

www.southwesttrains.co.uk/assisted... then South West Trains may provide a taxi from Liphook to Haslemere or Liss (depending which way you are travelling) at no extra cost to you (so you just pay the normal train ticket cost). This is provided as part of their obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act.

Obviously not as convenient as just being able to turn up and go but it is an option to consider.

I didn't know that! Thankyou so much that could make life a little easier. I am registered disabled and currently awaiting DLA/pip :).

There is no such thing as "registering as disabled".

You are however covered under the DDA if you have a long term disability , health condition or impairment that impacts on your daily life.
PIP /DLA is proof that you claim disability related benefits only.

As far as I'm concerned , station access should be accessible for all without the need for extra special transport arrangements .

There is a disability register..they assess you and issue a yellow card as proof of disability. Not everywhere does it but I got mine under Portsmouth council when I lived there but i'm pretty certain Hampshire council do one too.

Yes, there is such a thing as being registered disabled - the register is held with the local authority, so as a previous poster said, Portsmouth / Hampshire / etc. can issue it, following registration (and checks).

A member of this household also has the 'yellow card' to confirm registration.

There is also DLA / PIP often used to 'confirm' disability.

Sometimes the Blue Badge - for parking and mobility disabilities (and yes, this can include an 'unseen' disability which makes it hard form someone to walk far and no, you might not be able to 'see' what the disability is).

Re: £200,000 for Petersfield Train Station development
- Nicola (14th Jul 2014 - 14:17:59)

No. There isn't such a thing as registering as disabled, there isn't a national database. there was a national disability green card, used in conjunction with employment (your proof that you were unable to carry out particular tasks).

This was withdrawn as it was considered as disability discrimination.

As a holder of Hampshire County Councils Yellow card myself I am fully aware that it entities me access to local & council services but it is not something that every council in the country has on offer.

So if a visitor who uses a wheelchair from let's say, London, wants to visit Liphook and doesn't have a yellow card (or similar) or isn't in receipt of disability related benefits to *prove* (as you say) their disability, then they are restricted from using the stations facilities or anywhere else which requires *proof*.

As I said, station access should be accessible to everyone regardless of what benefits they are receiving, some people choose not to claim. Some people don't drive or have access to a vehicle therefore will not have a blue badge. And some people live outside of Hampshire & don't have a yellow card or equivalent.

Another issue with Liphook station is that there is no pedestrian access to the car park from Station Road. At peak times there are cars flying in and out of the station entrance and no pavement for people to walk on. It's an accident waiting to happen.
