But chickens can't fly!!! They can only just flap about and if lucky get one or two inches off the ground for a split second.
Besides cutting off an animals ability to get away from predators is darn right cruel!

Hi Rachel thanks for your great input, just for your reference chickens can fly enough to escape our garden, which is why im getting them clipped ( no pain involved ) to protect them from those \\\' predators\\\' you so rightly talk about.

Many thanks!

Chickens can fly, that's why they were given wings.

Admittedly they are not up to migrating south to warmer climes but I remember my father's chickens roosting in a tree.

It is necessary to clip the primary feathers on one wing only and it causes the chicken no pain at all

Oh Ali I bow to your obvious superior knowledge!
You must have Bantams, even though they too can hardly fly!
I have kept chickens over the years and have never had a problem. If you made sure your chickens home was made escape proof, there wouldn't be a problem.
Don't forget there are blood vessels in the lower half of the feather and if you sever a quill blood vessel you will really hurt your poor bird.

The original poster was asking for help not a debate on why clipping wings shouldn't be done.

I've always personally clipped our chickens wings when we kept them because they always found a way to escape.

I hope you find someone to help you.

yes originally all chickens roosted in trees in the wild. i often observe wild ducks too doing just that, to escape mr fox!

Re: chicken

Helen that is one of my points, if the wings are cut the bird can't get away from Mr Fox!

Just like to add i have chickens their wings are clipped because they were known to fly over a six foot fence,, as for mr. fox most people shut there chixs away before he comes looking

maybe her garden is all fenced in but is worried her chickens may get over her fence, hence clipping their wings for them to stay in the garden safe...!we had same problem with our ducks afew years ago, got told they dont fly because the type of duck they were but were proven wrong one morning when neighbour knocked on door with one under her arms from her garden lol good luck finding someone :)
