E-cigarette adverts - are they glamorising smoking?
- Sharon (14th Jun 2014 - 23:04:35)

Ok, before anyone starts getting angry and writing rude replies – I am very much in favour of e-cigarettes as an alternative for smokers, but....
I’m sure I’m not the only mother worried about the rise of adverts for e-cigarettes that glamorise smoking and promote them as positive lifestyle choices. They are great for existing smokers that want a safer alternative – and I’m all for that – but I’m really worried that the way that they are portrayed in radio adverts will encourage children to start smoking them. I have explained to my children why smoking is a bad choice to make, but now they are listening to these adverts and asking if they are safe to smoke. I was taken aback by this and wasn’t prepared with a suitable answer that would explain it in a way they would understand. But obviously nicotine is a drug, and it is being advertised to all ages. I have contacted the managing director of Eagle Radio to ask them to stop advertising during school run times – when I expect a lot of children will be listening in the car. But if I am a lone voice, I will probably be ignored.
Does anyone else know of any pressure groups that are pushing for tighter controls on the advertising of e-cigarettes? I would like to add my voice.

I absolutely agree with you. Recently I was at a dance competition with girls ranging from four to eighteen. One of the mothers was puffing away on an E cig in the hall in front of everyone and also seemed quite "showy" about it. If we are trying to prevent youngsters from any form of smoking should not this behaviour be banned in public areas too. A four year old is just going to notice the act of smoking.
For those who say it is not unhealthy to the children, it is the
subliminal message it is giving out.
