Tunnel break through
- Alan Baker (26th Feb 2009 - 18:20:58)
The hindhead tunnel has broken through, north to south.
This BBC video shows the moment bbc.co.uk/news...
"Engineers building Britain's longest road tunnel have met in the middle after a year of excavation. The 1.9 mile A3 tunnel under Hindhead in Surrey is expected to cost £371m and be completed by 2011. "

Oh goody!
That will now mean once opened, the traffic will zip through and then queue even further back, up by the Hogs Back junction leading into Guildford. Its bad enough now in the morning, can't wait.
Another point to consider is, would we have got the tunnel if that other white elephant called the Olympics had been awarded somewhere else. I think not!

I wonder if once the tunnel is up and running this will have an effect on the other local 'problem' road the A325. Apparently the stretch between Bordon and Farnham is the most dangerous A road in Hampshire.

I suppose I should have expected that the news of the breakthrough in the Hindhead Tunnel would be greeted with the curmudgeonly reception of begrudgers with which we in Liphook seem to be particularly blessed.
For those of us who have lived for over thirty years with the interminable traffic jams at Hindhead crossroads, the only piece of single carriageway and traffic lights between London and the South Coast, this breakthrough heralds a new beginning and a blessed relief to those of us living south of this bottleneck.
I for one congratulate the planners, engineers and construction workers for a superb achievement which, as far as I am concerned, has been brought about with almost no interference with A3 traffic.
When almost all homeowners in this country are witnessing a fall in property prices as a result of the current financial downturn, the tunnel may just make a positive effect on Liphook and district property prices.
Think about it.

Well said Paul. I, like you, am delighted with the new tunnel being built and I agree that property prices should have a very positive outcome when it's proven to be a great success. There is nothing more miserable than being stuck day in, day out, in endless streams of queue jumping traffic when you're only trying to get a short distance regularly.
Bring it on!

Had to drive to London yesterday, and tried to take the new tunnel.
It wasn't even open - not sure what all the media fuss was about.
