The Green Dragon
- Karen State (22nd Feb 2009 - 21:59:36)

l am the landlady of the Green Dragon, l am pleased to say that we are a totally renevoted pub with things switched around....

What was the public bar is now the Lounge bar, with leather chairs, a lovely open inglenook fireplace, what was the Pool room now has 2 settees to sink into, the old lounge bar now boasts a larger pool table, with darts, a quiz machine and fruit machine.

Good homecooked food is now available Thurs to Sun lunchtimes, and Thurs to Sat evenings.

We are child and dog friendly (as long as on a lead - dogs that is). You are always assured a warm welcome.

Any queries please call Karen on 01428 723276

The refurbished Green Dragon is a joy. The new Louge bar has something of the air of a gentleman's club and the roaring open fire most welcoming to both dog and walker.

I think you'll find the price of a pint has risen somewhat George!

Re: The Green Dragon
- Finchie (27th Feb 2009 - 17:38:40)

Blimey George - something must have upset you !

I like the new layout, a massive improvement.

Top Tip: Ask the Pizza Place to make the pizza really slowly and you can always slip a pint in !

Cheers, Finchie

Re: The Green Dragon
- george hogg (28th Feb 2009 - 14:05:45)

Re: The Green Dragon
- Sudha Rai (2nd Mar 2009 - 22:21:10)

George,
I don't know how long you have been away from Liphook and whether you have tasted Nepalese food before but my husband and I have taken over the Gurkha Chautari Restaurant in Station Road and given it a bit of facelift.

We still serve Nepalese food and have recently returned to free delivery in the area. You are most welcome to come and have a "Kathmandu" beer with us.

We look forward to showing you Nepalese hospitality in true Gurkha style!

Sudha and Mani.

[editor - I trust you mean a 'free' beer - for this 'free' advertisement !]

Re: The Green Dragon
- Paul (3rd Mar 2009 - 16:09:39)

Free beer .......................... hmmmmm

Paul

Re: The Green Dragon
- karen state (5th Mar 2009 - 09:46:19)

We may not be able to offer you free beer, but on Mon, Weds & Fri between 4 and 6 pm Courage Best and a weekly nominated lager or cider are 50p cheaper a pint, an absolute bargain, so come and join us and beat the credit crunch.
This Saturday, 7th March 8pm, Karaoke, get those tonsils warmed up, and come in for a warble.

Re: The Green Dragon
- Sudha (5th Mar 2009 - 16:05:48)

Paul,
You are most welcome to the Chautari for the free beer.....I might even offer you the Nepal Ice !! I am told that this beer has a real kick to it.

(Sorry, for the advertising Ed.Actually,I have been meaning to invite you round to the Chautari so that you would tell everyone in Liphook via this website!)

Look forward to meeting you both...and George too,of course.

Sudha.

Re: The Green Dragon
- Liphookhardware (5th Mar 2009 - 21:07:09)

While you are sampling all the food & drink fests on offer in Liphook, we have a store that is affectionally known as 'Aladdin’s Cave.' Opposite to the great Ghurkha Chatori!!

We have moved on a bit since you were here - but still offer a good old rummage and products that are not available in any local supermarket or other Liphook stores.

Just thought I would add to your visit. LOL

Re: The Green Dragon
- paul (9th Mar 2009 - 10:21:43)

Sudhau - i think you might be getting alot of customers called Paul visit to claim free beer - LOL

and as for the "Aladdins Cave" - i know who you are and what are you going to be offering a free box for of nails ? LOL

Paul

Re: The Green Dragon
- sudha (9th Mar 2009 - 21:05:47)

I look forward to meeting the genuine Paul and George for the free beer at the Chautari.
I must say I am rather surprised not more people use this website to exchange news and also to advertise the local amenities. After all, it is the local community who make the difference in any place, isn't it?Specially at present when so many High Street shops are closing,we ought to support our local businesses and save the Planet by not driving away too far.
Mind you, George is travelling a long way to visit Liphook, so we should welcome him and make his visit enjoyable!
Sudha.

Re: The Green Dragon
- Liphookhardware (9th Mar 2009 - 22:36:18)

Karen I have to say it is great to see a pub in liphook that has the feel of the pubs in years gone by, its a proper pub. Me and my mates enjoyed many a long day in there. Keep it up

Re: The Green Dragon
- Anne Heywood (11th Mar 2009 - 14:32:41)

I'm glad that Karen's post about The Green Dragon has got back to talking about the proper subject - THE GREEN DRAGON!!

Re: The Green Dragon
- sudha (11th Mar 2009 - 22:14:06)

Yes, there is nothing like a good pub in a village.I look forward to a nice meal there once my hubby recovers from his surgery and we are back in the swing
of things in Liphook.
I didn't mean to divert the topic from the Green dragon to the Chautari as I was trying to inform George about the changes in Liphook so I am sorry if I offended any body.
Actually, this has given the pub a really good advertisement ,don't you think?
See you there soon?
Sudha.

Re: The Green Dragon

Fully accepted slapped wrist - but like true conversations, they diversify. A bit of TIC.

Good luck to the Dragon, it needed a makeover!

Our support for other businesses is never in doubt!

Re: The Green Dragon
- george hogg (9th May 2009 - 13:26:46)

hi karen

i thoroughly enjoyed my trip back to the green dragon after 50 years. it brought back all my memories of the pub, just wish i could have turned the clock back & met all the local characters i spoke to all those years ago. myself and my family enjoyed our very tasty lunch and i enjoyed the pint of best bitter which just tasted the same (great) the staff were very nice & the locals i spoke to are still as friendly today as the local people were back then. the green dragon has definately had a facelift too. it looks good. it's just a pity i couldn't spend more time in the area. i would certainly have spent more time in the green dragon.

Re: The Green Dragon
- Karen State (11th May 2009 - 21:37:04)

Re: The Green Dragon
- Don Petter (2nd Jun 2012 - 18:33:02)

Just caught up with this thread.

The picture is indeed of Fred Benwell, who was landlord of the Green Dragon in the late '50s and early '60s, when I started my drinking career! He was ex-RAF and an excellent and friendly host. I seem to remember he left and moved to the Odiham area.

The saloon bar was only the little front square area up the steps on the right, and the beams had several leather straps (like the hangers on a tube train) which were very useful, as he said, 'when the bar was in motion'.

A bit earlier than this the landlord was a Mr Larner, whose son Gerald I can remember playing with.

I am looking forward to visiting the new Green Dragon format in the near future.

Re: The Green Dragon
- Mari Wallace (8th Jun 2012 - 16:55:25)

I'm researching/writing a piece on the Green Dragon for the Liphook Community Magazine and would welcome any specifics about the pub's history. I've been to the Heritage Centre and got information from them, and have read the Talkback thread but would be grateful for any other information or anecdotes.
