pedestrians
- dawn (18th May 2014 - 14:12:55)

Yesterday, as it was a sunny day, I walked from Liphook - home to Passfield.

Before I'd left Liphook 6 cars sped through the zebra crossing whilst I was waiting at the side of the road - and the 7th only stopped because I had already stepped out onto the road.

Then on the section of road where Passfield starts - despite walking on the correct side of the road [facing cars coming towards me] I nearly got hit about 3 times by car wing-mirrors because they couldn't be bothered to pull out to make room.

What is happening on our roads and where have people's manners gone?

There is actually a footpath all the way from Liphook to Passfield. It's a bit overgrown in places, as unfortunately it hasn't been maintained. Was lovely when it was last gravelled (about 20 years ago). Follow the paved path as far as it goes, then the footpath continues on the grass verge.

Alternatively, to avoid walking along the road, take the path that turns off left on the Hill House Hill bend and walk across the common and Conford Moor, to emerge opposite the bus stop. (Easier to see what I mean if you have an ordnance survey map) .

Dawn I totally agree with you. I do drive but haven't had a car in about 4-5 years. I have to walk to get anywhere.
The amount of times I have nearly been run over while using a zebra crossing is outrageous!
A lot (not all) of drivers are in such a hurry to get wherever they are going, they don't seem to have the time and patience to stop at a crossing!
If I have to walk along a road with no pavement, I will ware white and carry a white bag to make myself more visible to the on-coming traffic.

Hi Janet, I do know about the supposed gravel path. However the gravel is now non-existent, the path is overgrown with stinging nettles and the trees and bushes overhead are now so over hanging that I was being forced to walk in the road constantly - that is why I crossed over to the correct side.

I know that these is a back route through Conford, however as I have a heart condition I need to be assured that if I fell down someone would come across me - so I cant risk walking though the Conford woods or the back road through Conford either. As a rule I would not use that back path when I am on my own anyway too remote for me to feel safe as I was followed there once.

I do feel that the National Trust have it all wrong in their attempt to refuse tarmac paving as it really does alienate people who are non-drivers - especially when we have no bus service at all at the weekends. I'm sure people are more important than a grass verge.

Dawn, I walked from Liphook station to Bordon back in 1997 There was no path to walk then , and there has been no path since. The first time I walked along this road was in 1962, it is exactly the same since then. I suggest you live closer to the village , as the area you live in should not have been built on, which is a housing estate built in the middle of the countryside.

Hi Dawn,

As you might remember, some years ago I campaigned to have that footpath reinstated. Numerous meetings later, the outcome was that it's a sssi site . Suggest contacting Natural England, National Trust etc.
As much as I would like to help out on local issues , I'm now disabled myself . I feel your pain. Must be something in the Haskell Centre water eh !

Cheers.

I would have to politely disagree with A.Ryan. If a footpath can be built joining lindford to Passfield then why not Passfield to Liphook. I seem to remember during my meetings with Highways back in the day, that it was also to do with speed limits, housing frontage & footfall.

Dawn, I correct myself, the last time I walked it was 1977 not 1997.

Re: pedestrians

The house in which we live was built in the late 50's / early 60's well before any Housing Estates were built. In fact one of the reasons the Housing Estate in Eleanor Close and then later The Lyndons were successful was the sustainable transport that we had at that time.

Sadly, that transport was largely down to South West Trains which used to run a rail link from Bordon, Lindford, Passfield, Conford - up to Liphook.

Now that has ceased we must rely on the almost non-existent number 13. At least we have a little service albeit not when school children need it to get to school or local people who are 'eco' minded would need it to get to work - which means that the numbers are very low on the uptake. Still at least we have it. Poor Lindford now has nothing at all.
