Cat litter - what do you do with it?
- Dawn Hoskins (17th Feb 2009 - 11:22:29)
Now the cats are so decrepid they can't get out of the cat flap - we have installed a cat litter tray into the boot room.
But what do you do with it after it is used? I don't want to put it to land fill (wheely bin option) as it smells and is horrible.
Ideas please
Thanks

I think there is such a thing as an animal waste disposal unit, which is burried into the ground. My in-laws had one.
Alternatively, you could dig a hole and bury it (as cats normally do), but avoid the neighbours gardens!!

I don't mean the solid bits - as I flush them down the loo, I mean the actual gravel stuff.
I would have to dig a blinking great trench with the amount they get through each week. Or maybe I am changing it too much?
I think the wood pellet type would bio-degrade, but the other sort looks a bit clay-like so I don't think burying it would be very good?
What do other cat owners do?

I use the Super-Clumping cat litter from Sainsburys and just remove the solid lumps (pee & poo) so there's not very much to put in the bin....it's certainly not necessary to empty the whole tray every time they use it....just top it up.

What do you mean "after" it is used. Am I supposed to be changing it? I thought it was getting a bit whiffy.

OK
am going to try the super clumping thing.
At the mo am using wood pellets because I thought they were more environmentally friendly, but the whole tray gets 'contaminated' and also, it doubles in size when it gets wet! Bit of a disaster really....
thanks Eneida.

Hi Dawn
Curiosity (no pun intended) got the better of me as to what cat owners do...
Found this that may help:
There is a brand of cat litter called "Feline Pine" cat litter made from recycled saw dust. It is 100% biodegradable, and can be composted. Normal brands of cat litter are made of clay or silica, and do not biodegrade as readily. If you want more info, check out their website www.naturesearth.com
But I had to laugh when I saw this...you can train a cat to use the family toilet (allegedly!?). I wonder who would get the blame for a damp seat/not flushing... hope the link works:

Yep, thats the stuff I'm using.
Don't recomend it.
Firstly it is so light that the cats accidently 'fling it' about a foot in the air - currently all over the entire boot room floor - and also, every time they 'go' the whole lot swells up and smells ponky.
So you end up with treble the amount you put in after about 3 wee's (all over flowing the side of the tray) and ten tonnes of sawdust to dump.
So, I'm going to try the clumping thing that Eneida said. Also, did you know Toby is very poorly? Having operation today - should be home for bed time.

Sending my love and hugs to Toby... who, as you know, I bonded with the moment I met him. What a lovely, lovely, dog. I know you will be doing you absolute best for him. x x x
