Fracking success!
- Sarah (12th May 2014 - 23:32:12)

Looks like we have passed the first hurdle in the Fernhurst fracking app!

www.theguardian.com/environment/...

What a great start, huge thanks to Frack Free Fernhurst for their excellent organisation and communication of local concerns!

Next step: cancelling it altogether!

Unfortunately we have a bit of a quandry. The Tories are pulling out all the stops to push this industry and will stop at nothing to help it get started. It is in their nature as an organisation to support high profitablity for their biggest supporters. However, their record with the economy is quite good.
But this is at the cost of environmental destruction beyond anyone's comprehension and we (Liphook) are right in the middle of the raw material supply area.
If you do not support fracking then do not vote Tory (or UKip who are even more fanatical about it).
If you support it then at least do so via a political organisation that will minimise the environmental and health risks the industry attracts.
The political right are only interested in generating profits and the environmental and health cost is low on the list of priorities.

Yes completely.

Voting conservative should be completely off the agenda for anyone with the remotest concern for the environment. We only need to look at their choice of environment secretary to tell us that - he is a climate change sceptic, in full support of fracking, building new-build housing on ancient woodland, disregarding the precautionary principle on subjects like neonicotinoid use, supports a badger cull that is more likely to spread tb further and in full support of GM. No trace of scientific reasoning behind his environmental stance.

Voting conservative for the sake of our economy and therefore choosing to disregard the environment for now, is misguided.

We should remember that the environment is a contributor to our economic wealth. You CAN put a price on ecosystem services like the carbon value of an ancient woodland or the pollination of our crops by bees.

From a local perspective you can put a price on the unexploited national park in the South Downs, in terms of the biodiversity it harbours, the recreational and tourism value of the area in it's unexploited state, and even on the peace and quiet afforded in the back gardens of Fernhurst and the roads in liphook being free from fracking-related traffic: having heavy industry such as this so close by is sure to have an impact on local house prices, and weaken our local economy in that way.

I think it is really important to keep in mind that voting for sound environmental policy IS actually voting for our economy. Only that way, you are voting for long term security rather than short term profit.

It's also important to keep protesting against the fracking application in Fernhurst, because this small success from cancelling plans to drill horizontally may actually be a tactic to strengthen the chances of the planning application being approved..
