Telephone call
- Richard Hartland (17th Apr 2014 - 20:35:53)
About 5.15pm the phone rings
I answer Hello
The caller says I wonder if you can help me
Isay that it all depends
The caller says it is about your BT account
I say who are you and who do you work for
The phone goes click
1471 reveals that the caller with held their number
I wonder what that was all about

When some years ago I installed a BT line to my office, I elected not to have my number listed in the directory since it was a dedicated business line and at first was known only to my wife at home.
Within 24 hours of installation I received an unsolicited telephone call from a rival telephone supplier asking me if I was happy with my present supplier and would I like to change!
I maintain that BT or someone within BT had sold the number and since that date not a day goes by when I do not get at least two cold selling or pre recorded calls. I have also had the frankly unnerving caller that hangs up when they hear my voice.

I find the easiest way of dealing with these idiot calls, whether allegedly from BT, Microsoft or whomever is to say "you work for XXX, so do I, where are you based?".
In the highly unlikely event they turn it round and ask what you do in the company, tell them you're an engineer.
If it's a scam call, all you'll hear is a click as they ring off.

Even better is to have caller ID on your phone and simply don't answer it if you don't recognise the number.
If it's important, the caller will leave a message or will email or write to you instead.
