Grayshott Hall
- Greg Gatenby (9th Apr 2014 - 21:21:20)

Dear good folk of Liphook,
My next book is going to be a history of how the lives of authors were perceived a century ago via what we now call "antique postcards." One of the authors I will be including is Tennyson who, as many of you will know, stayed at Grayshott Hall in 1867. Unfortunately, from the distance of Toronto, I have not been able to find with certainty an image of the Hall as it would have appeared to Tennyson. The images of the Hall I have found on Google and elsewhere seem to show a building of the late Victorian period--not of 1867 vintage, and thus I am left wondering if the lords of the manor had a new home built after Tennyson had departed as their guest. You can appreciate I want to include the correct image in my book, so I write to ask if anyone in Liphook can send me an image of Grayshott Hall as it was in 1867 (for study purposes only). Once I have a certain image, I will then scout for a vintage postcard of the same building. I don't pretend to be an architectural historian so it may be that the current hall is actually the building I'm after--but as an author I want to safe, not sorry. Naturally, those who write with appropriate info will be acknowledged in my book with gratitude. Yours cordially, Greg Gatenby, Toronto Canada

Hi

I think the house was rebuilt in the 1880's. Here is a link to the Grayshott spa website (the current use of the hall), which details a little of it's history.

www.grayshottspa.com/...

If you wanted a print of the current hall, the Francis Frith website has photographs from 1928, which are available to buy. I think it is francisfrith.com and search under Grayshott.

All the best with your research.
