Great films coming up at the Millennium Centre!
- Jane Ives (8th Apr 2014 - 15:21:58)

The cinema at the Millennium Centre has a fantastic series of films coming up which, if ‘Philomena’ is anything to go by, will be a sell out! Make sure you buy your tickets early!

Friday 2nd May: Mandela – Long Walk to Freedom
The stirring, almost epic, story of Nelson Mandela and his struggle against the apartheid regime. Very well told and of course utterly moving and unforgettable. If you lived through this period in history, leading up to Nelson Mandela’s release, you will find this film depicts the series of events very well.

Friday 6th June: Twelve Years a Slave
The true story of Solomon Northup, an educated and free black man living in New York during the 1840's who gets abducted, shipped to the south, and sold into slavery. This film won the Academy Award for Best Film – I’ve seen this and it is quite incredible and the awards it has won are justly deserved.

Friday 4th July: The Invisible Woman
The secret and scandalous secret love of Charles Dickens.

Friday 1st August: The Book Thief
A wartime story told from ‘the other side’: Set in a small German town in a German working class family where the war and Nazism are facts of life over which the ordinary people have no control.
Having read the book I was a little dubious about seeing the film – but it is an excellent adaptation, beautifully acted, balancing humour, emotion and drama perfectly.

Nothing for the kids as usual.

Heather... We are hoping that in the not too distant future we will start up a cinema club for children. Watch this space!
