Advertising on Midhurst Road Roundabout
- Phil McNamara (24th Jan 2009 - 15:12:02)

Whilst driving home from work the other evening, approaching the roundabout at Midhurst Road (the entrance to Sainsburys, as it were) my headlights picked out a nice arrangement of DIY advertising on the roundabout.

Previously some stores in Station Road have felt it necessary to advertise their wares using signage placed / tied to the roundabout.

I see a certain IT retailer has now joined in, and is advertising on at least 2 approaches to said roundabout.

I wasn't sure if this is sponsorship of the foilage, legal advertising sanctioned by EHDC Planning, or illegal advertising by opportunistic entrepreneurs.

Personally I feel it just looks tatty and amateurish - presumably why there are Planning Laws for such things, no doubt.

What gives?

Just put up PROPER sign posts to the shops in Station Road for goodness sake. It can't be such a huge ask surely?

Just a quick update....

At the Highways Byways and Transport committee meeting n 12th Jan it was stated that a letter had been sent Sainsbury's requesting an update on the situation of their offer to finance signs. Sainsbury's reply had indicated they would be happy to support local traders in any application made, and a meeting between the local traders and Sainsbury's was due to take place on 20th November 2008. HCC had adviused that they were unaware of an agreement for Sainsbury's to fund any signs for the Station Road shops, but would be happy to assist with signage for local shops, once traders clarified their requirements in more detail.

Once again, I will try to make sense of this and report back.

I myself did approach EHDC on a similar matter regarding signage, and was informed that in these difficult trading conditions EHDC did not wish to appear heavy handed, and with so many firms going bust they do not want to take any flak eg bad publicity if they enforced removal of technically illegal signage . I do not know the owners of the roundabout, I presumed it was Sainsburys but I could be very wrong on that. I do not think it belongs to the Parish Council. I suppose it is up to the owners to allow or disallow something on their property.

What I know about the signage and ownership of said roundabout is as follows:

I attended a parish meeting, for the purpose of highlighting the fact that nothing had come from the original meeting with Sainsbury’s and requested that perhaps the council could help the traders in achieving better signage to inform visitors here that there is another trading street and not just the 'square and Sainsbury’s'.

The proposal seemed to be well received and an application would be made to Highways

A meeting was held between the chairman of the Station Road retailers Assoc. and a representative of Sainsbury’s ( One of the former deputation sent from Sainsbury’s HO to a meeting held over a year ago) I have been reliably informed (By Mr Rob Evans - a member of the Parish council), that Sainsbury’s have agreed to fund the signage, and it is their roundabout.

How far down the road this has gone - I do not know, but I would like to see proper signs up soon!

If those signs stay there much longer, and are erected with disregard to bye-laws and planning, then I shall have to extend my house in whatever way I like as EHDC clearly have no power or desire to enforce planning permissions in Liphook.

I don't know how long the signs have been there, and have not been round that way for months!!

I do know that you can display signs for upto 4 weeks without permission, but after that date they must be removed.

I am sure if they are offending the owner of the roundabout they would have been removed long ago - perhaps they do not see them as competition! or a problem.

I see it as a good opportunity of someone trying to advertise their business in a village that has no proper direction or inclination to promote the business here, and it highlights the need for a section of the PC to undertake the concerns and ambitions of its traders and companies and promote them like Haslemere, Farnham, Petersfield, Bordon & Whitehill, Grayshott and Alton do!
