Longmoor Road development plans
- Nick Hancock (31st Mar 2014 - 11:22:10)
Yet again (28th March) the Liphook Herald has allowed its front page to be used as a noticeboard to publish press releases from developers. This time it's the Northcottt Trust and their plans to enclose the land adjoining Longmoor Road with housing development and build a pointless "relief road" linking it to Porsmouth Road. We've been there before (a lot of people will remember their exhibition in the autumn at the Deer's Hut).
I've just sent the letter below to the Editor - let's see if I get published.
"Once again, the headline article on your front page (28th March 2014) is devoted to uncritical publicity for the Northcott Trust’s development proposals for its land to the south of Longmoor Road.
The Trust offers EHDC help in completing a neighbourhood plan. No mention is made of the Parish Plan which has been under development since at least 2010. The current version of that Plan’s conclusions on planning and development states that the goal for Portsmouth and Longmoor Roads should be to ensure that the picturesque views across the National Park should be preserved. In order to achieve this, the erection or alteration of any buildings or structures or any change to the landscape setting that would adversely affect those views should be rejected.
The Trust also proposes a relief road linking Longmoor Road to Portsmouth Road. This would benefit only traffic approaching Liphook from Rake and Petersfield. Anyone from Liphook wanting to use this relief road would have to approach it via Station Road – which is already over-congested at peak hours. The real purpose of the proposed road must be to serve the Trust’s planned housing development.
The Trust suggests increasing access to the National Park land. The issue is not access – Liphook is already blessed with plentiful access to open land – it is preservation of the open aspect across the land, so close to the village centre.
The Trust’s real view of the National Park is that this land should not have been included at all. On its website it says “the boundary of the National Park is drawn too tightly around Liphook”. That boundary is a fact, established after a lengthy planning enquiry at which the Trust had plenty of opportunity to make its case. It has yet to recognise that it lost that battle."

You only have to look at the front page of this weeks Herald to see the political bias of its Editorial directive!
Now Tyndle Newspapers have bought the Petersfield Post we are without can only read what Tyndle Newspapers want us to read.

Dear Nick,
Your letter has been published and What a Very good letter it is if I may say..!!
Despite the front pages of propaganda the Herald does seem to be publishing Letters-to-the-Editor on the subject of protecting the scenic views and beautiful countryside of our South Downs National Park. Several such letters have been published recently, mainly in the name of the SOS Bohunt Manor Community Action Group.
Let us all continue the flow of Letters of similar content to yours! Happy Writing! Andrew

Since the Editor of the Liphook Herald chose not to publish this letter, I reprint it here for those interested in reading the truth, a scant comodity in the pages of the Herald Group and now, unfortunately the Petersfield Post.
Sir,
Re: DEVELOPER OFFERS DEAL TO PARISH
You may recall that I wrote to you on the 11th of October 2013 about the biased an incorrect reporting of the pre planning exhibition on behalf of the Northcott trust.
On that occasion you did not see fit to publish my letter, hardly surprising, but I did expect the courtesy of a reply especially as the integrity of your newspaper had been challenged.
Once again in the leader in this week's edition (28th March) your reporter, who was present when a pre planning presentation was made to the Planning committee of Bramshott and Liphook Parish Council, chose to ignore the constructive comments and questions of those present and instead quoted verbatim from the presentation document of the Director of Planning for the Peter Brett Partnership. The piece even ends with the web site address of the developers!
This is not balanced reporting. It is nothing short of a giant 'puff' in support of the proposed development. This sort of one sided ill informed reporting is undermining the integrity of your paper.

The concept of a relief road linking the Longmoor Road to the Portsmouth Road is totally flawed.
A relief road implies that the Government, ie us the tax payers, will pay for its construction rather than the developer.
The question is where does any traffic go, having come from the A3 along this 'relief' road once it arrives on the London Road/Station Road roundabout. How does it get to Haslemere, Midhurst, Fernhurst etc ?
Those using Station Road during the recent road maintenance programme will be well aware of problems extra traffic here creates.
The real traffic problems in the Liphook Square are caused by the excess traffic on the Headley Road, the Haslemere Road and to a lesser extent the London Road. Yes, at school times, as in every village or town in the country, there is heavy traffic on the Longmoor Road, but as a regular user, I can assure you, it clears quite quickly.
For goodness sake let us have an independent unbiased traffic study into Liphook traffic so that such hare brained schemes can be replaced by sensible planning.
