Gluten free
- Jo (13th Mar 2014 - 13:59:15)

I have just had gluten free fish and chips from the shop on the Headley Road, delicious. Also they make gluten free fishcakes.

Jo

Would be very interested to know if they do this at all times or just specific times? I have a coeliac mother-in-law who misses fish and chips and we keep meaning to try the Headley Rd fish and chip shop when she visits.

But we thought that they may only be able to guarantee gluten free if they are using new oil?

They have separate fryers and they were very careful to use different utensils

My son is on a GF diet and we get fish and chips there sometimes. They just do it on request and have not had to pre-order to date. We get offered GF free vinegar as well!

I do not think any vinegar has gluten in it so thats a pretty safe bet!

Distilled vinegar is ok, but malt vinegar isn't GF free.

I have a friend who needs a gluten free diet so I always check. I have searched on a coeliac website which states that. the distillation process of producing malt vinegar would mean that only a trace element would remain and the amount of vinegar someone puts on fish and chips would not be enough to need to avoid malt vinegar if a coeliac.

Thanks H, worth knowing. To date, I have just steered clear of anything that might be remotely gluten related, so tips like this are very useful. It's a bit of a minefield!

Try the GLUTAFIN website they have lots of info on there. It is a minefield and very difficult I agree.
