Fibre Optic... Coming to a village near you!
- Colin (25th Feb 2014 - 21:22:41)

Well done to everyone who voted. It appears Liphook will be one of the first areas in Hampshire to get BT Infinity Fibre Optic Internet installed, and according to BT it will be available by the end of 2014! Good news for all!

Great news! I have clients in Thursley who struggled to get 2 to 2.5 mb over the last few years and are now getting between 20 & 30 mb.

I have heard that these speeds are normal as long as you are no further than 1,000m from the hub. The signal weakens between 1,000 & 1,500m and is not worth signing up to @ over 1,500m.

Can anyone confirm this? Thx.

FTTC is Fibre To The Cabinet. The only important distance is how far you are from the green street cabinet as the last part of the connection is still over your copper phone line.

Great news.
With fibre optic and new street lights, which are much better than the old ones, Liphook can now enter the 21st century.
My family are all very excited about the new army surplus shop too.
We love Liphook.

Susie

Bet you can't wait for all the new houses either!

So how do we know where our nearest green box is then? I'm in Passfield, so I'm guessing that is too far!!!

Hi Sharon, at the moment BT have not included the Passfield exchange for FTTC, so no improvement for residents with 01428 751... numbers I'm afraid.

As I understand it, new larger cabinets (green boxes) will be required to be installed for this technology to be rolled out. Some of the sites have very limited space, such as the one at the Portsmouth Road end of Station Road, so I wonder whether they'll manage to install them everywhere required to provide fibre to all of Liphook.

I'm unfortunately 2km away from the cabinet, so there's no benefit for me anyway. Looks like I'm stuck with a 3mb connection.

Does anyone know if there's a green box in or near to St James' Park? (the estate behind Sainsbury by the Millennium Hall)...

It would be good if I could get advice possibly from A BT person as to why it is currently taking them 4 months to even look at why I am not getting my phone line? Obviously I am paying bills on time! This all started before the bad weather so please do not suggest it is that !

The green cab for the new estate behind Sainsburys is in the layby in Portsmouth rd (cab 9). Passfield doe's not have green cabs, the houses are fed direct from the exchange next door but one to the shop. The closer you are to the green cab (not Passfield) with fibre the better the speed will be as there is no loss between exchange and cab unlike on a standard copper line which is losing speed as soon as it leaves the exchange!
