A word of caution regarding stoves and chimneys
- Michael Farrant (19th Feb 2014 - 10:37:16)
I would like to pass on an experience that we have had with the owner of Inwood Stoves.
Last autumn we had a stove installed with a new chimney flue. First of all he cut a hole in the wrong place in our ceiling and saw no problem that he had done so. He then put the chimney flue in wonky. We then had HETAS round to inspect the fitting. Their conclusion was that the route through the ceiling was 'non compliant'. This meant that the hot chimney was in contact with combustible material. Overall a very difficult person to deal with. Best avoided.
Since this episode we have had a new chimney built by someone else whom I would be happy to recommend.

We had a very simple installation from Inwood a few years ago which was fine - however, we felt we were massively overcharged. Something like £600 installation for a job which took them 30 minutes. We were told this is their standard charge and it could not be changed. We've not been back since.

We also had Inwood Stoves quote for a woodburner to be fitted, what a rude and unhelpful man. The rumours we had heard about the quality of his workmanship and after meeting him were enough to put us of, even if he had been the cheapest quote we wouldn't have used him.
We settled on using Focus Stoves in Four Marks to supply the woodburner, after having been recommended to use them via this website.
They in turn put us on to an installation specialist they use, Clive Smith from Liss (cschimneys@btinternet.com) whose work was clean, reliable, professional and a thoroughly all-round nice guy. I would completely recommend him for an excellent service.
Those of you who have had such bad experiences should contact HETAS the regulatory body.

i agree I asked them for a quote and was hoorified at what they wanted to charge. I think they imagine that people in liphook trust them because they have been there so long but it pays to shop around. Once you have decided which stove you want, you do not have to use any high street shop, choose from a manufacture web site direct or possibly toolstation or the like, have it delivered then ask someone else to do the work. Inwood stoves put a markup on twice, once for the stove and once for having the work done.

I have to say we have had the opposite experience, Inwood were incredibly knowledgeable about the best way to meet our requirements and fitted our stove efficiently. They were able to ensure the whole system (woodburner, back boiler for hot water, pump) were in and functioning well very quickly.
