Powers of Parish Councils ...
- Finchie (11th Dec 2008 - 00:05:23)

Starting a new thread - related to the recent elections and Parich Council discussion - but nothing really to do with the elections:

This is information about the what our Parich Council CAN do...

Too much negativity about the lack of power in the planning process. Lets focus on what you CAN do for us, my elected councillors. (The recent thread was a real eye opener for me as I thought the PC had full control of the planning applications).

I got this from ...
compton.parish.hants.gov.uk

The more entartaining points are:-
Baths: Provision of baths and wash-houses
>>> Brilliant - perhaps needs to be updated (or just deleted) ?

Clocks: Provision and maintenance of public clocks, on churches or elsewhere.
>>> Quaint, but I guess someone has to look after those things

But on a serious note:-
Entertainments: Provision of any form of public entertainment and any premises for giving entertainments. (This includes maintaining bands or orchestras and providing for dancing.)
>>> more support of great initiatives like Ben's Gig in the Garden. I want more - on a monthly basis. Come on Barry - entertain me !

Halls: Provision of buildings for public meetings and functions, for indoor sports or physical recreation, or for the use of clubs or societies having recreational, social or athletic objects.
>>> When the hell are we going to get some reasonably priced QUALITY fitness facility in the area - much as I like the Herons - we are big enough to support our own - that does not mean an overpriced Champneys facility or a broken facility at Bohunt !
>>> This has to be a priority getting a youth facility for our youngsters

Signs: Power to erect signs which warn of dangers or announce a place name, or indicate a bus stop.
>>> every September signage informing newbies dropping kids off at Liphook Junior School in their outrageus 4*4s, to let people OUT before blocking them in - start focussing on the real issues that affect us (Karen - this might help your dangerous parking predicament ?!!)

Swimming: Provision of indoor or outdoor swimming pools or bathing places.
>>> if only. Big space behind Sainsuburys/Millenium, Dome - I think should be a Waterpark ... Discuss ...

My suggestion - divert all the time and effort debating planning into the above and we might get somewhere. If you can't control it why discuss it !

Cheers, Finchie

I think that "Power to deal with offensive ditches" is quite frightening, can they be given an ASBO ?

But seriously this one is interesting - Town and Country Planning - Right to be notified of planning applications.

It doesn't actually say they can do anything about them, just accept that they have been notified.

Alan
