Lost dog and police car
- Christine (9th Dec 2008 - 19:18:35)

Hi - I've just arrived home and nearly ran over a dog coming off the A3. I'm useless with breeds but it was very large and ginger coloured - it was dark but i could see it had a big circular tag on its collar. I did stop the car to try and catch him but he ran off in the direction of the A3 slip road.

I also tailed a police car for 15 mins flashing my lights and beeping to try and get his attention to help with the dog as it could cause a big accident but the policeman obviously wasn't interested as even when he stopped at the temp traffic lights at the end of the road by the shops near the train station, i got out the car to tap on his window and he drove off!!!! I hate to think what would of happened if i'd been in serious trouble!!!! Anyway - I just wanted to say I hope the owner of the dog got him/her back and that there were no accidents caused.

That's terrible about the police car - did you get any identification details - part of the car number for instance ?

No i didn't think to get any identification, i was in too much of a fluster trying to get him to stop! I am sure he'd be easy to identify if I make a complaint as there aren't exactly many police cars that would have been driving in circles round liphook at 6.45 last night... I'm guessing he would have been rostered on to that route so there would be a record?

Sorry to read about your experience. I am a volunteer with a brilliant organisation called Dog Lost, they are always looking for people in various post code areas to be on the look out for lost dogs and/or to report a dog found/seen wandering. They have a central data base for any owners who have lost their dog, you can scroll down a list of lost and found descriptions. For an anxious dog owner it really is a great organisation.

The web site is www.doglost.co.uk (hope the link works) but if not, you can google it and have a read about any lost/found dogs.

If you register, they send you emails with descriptions of lost (or possibly stolen) dogs in or around your post code area, (I was not surprised at the numbers going missing from Frensham Ponds and The Devils Punchbowl - some stolen from cars parked there!) all they ask is that you keep a look out and report if you see an animal matching the description, where and when you saw it.
There is even a dogs re-united tab, which is heartwarming. Please register, it costs nothing just to keep your eyes open and may help a distressed dog owner. Thank you.

Dear Christine,

I was sorry to read about your experience. I have asked my Inspectors to see if we can identify the driver concerned and to establish what may have happened. We shall ensure that the driver is made aware of your comments and shall offer suitable advice to the officer concerned.

With regards

Philip Kedge
Chief Inspector
East Hampshire District Commander

Chief Inspector - Many thanks for your concern, I have reported the insident to Hampshire police and they are tracking down the vehicle driver to get an explanation for me and have been very appologetic. I would like to say my past experiences with the police have all been good and I didn't mean my post to undermine the trust people have in the police in this area, I just got a little flustered when I posted last night from worry about that dog causing a pile up! This was an isolated incident and if it had been a real emergency I could have dialed 999. :-)

Jan - thanks for the advice on the website, there is no matching description listed for the dog I saw. I haven't registered the sighting of the dog as you need to know its breed and gender etc. and I am not an expert and didn't get close enough to see any details on it.
Hopefully the owners managed to track it down before too long, or that it made its own way home.

This is a similar experience to mine on Monday evening, but I did trace where the dog belonged to. There were two guard dogs loose on the entrance to the new retirement village. I stopped my car as they were both in the road and I could have run them over.

They appeared to be two german shepherd dogs. I did not get out of my car but commanded them Mrs Woodhouse fashion to follow the car which they did, and I went onto the site. A security guard came over and I told him off for having dogs loose so close to the A3 and that I could have killed them, and he did not seem that bothered.

I asked him to keep the gates locked but it appears they have not done this. If the dog was german shepherd style dog it is probably the same one. I should really write a letter of complaint.

No it wasn't a German Shephard... I'm not 100% sure but the closest I could guess is a Great Dane.

Hi

Thats awful about the police car... and when you read the newer threads about improving the safety and awareness of the local area and they just decide to drive off.

It does make you wonder if its actually worth it.
Or if its actually true???
