Passfield Power Cut
- Alan Baker (8th Dec 2008 09:27:26)
Passfield lost power last night.
This is a major outage with the electricity board currently trying to install generators to restore it.
We have just been told this is now unlikely to happen before midday.
It is very cold in the Passfield Business Centre !

has anyone got some elec heaters that they would kindly lend out please.
We've been without heating overnight and im unsure when the boiler man can come out to fix the boiler.
The house is freezing! Also my neighbour has the same make of boiler so has exactly the same problem..so if anyone could spare 2 heaters we would be very grateful.
many thanks, nikki

FFFFFFRREEZING here too Nikki.
Our boiler has finally started after a long time trying to sort out the digital stuff. Still wrapped up in duvet cover though as the inside of the house must have dropped to freezing over night and it will take a long time for the radiators to heat it all up again.
The droning deisel generator which is chugging along at the end of the road is clearly only a temporary fix, so I am going to go out and get some more candles today just in case.
You are welcome to come here in the mean time.
Dawn

Can someone find the link which was on here (poss last November?) regarding how to claim compensation.
I would be grateful as I cant see anything on my paperwork.
I think if it is off for more than 3 hours you can claim?

Thanks for the offer dawn, i've dug out some hot water bottles and fleeces for the children when they get in from school..the engineer has rung to say cant come out till tomorrow..the surge has apparently done something to it and a part needs replacing, myself and my 2 neighbours have exactly the same boiler with the same error code so he will be a busy boy tomorrow. He said same thing has happened in eastliegh when they had powercut and we're to claim from southern elec which i dont hold out much hope because they wouldnt supply us with heaters, considering my neighbour is disabled and the rest of us have young children I think its a sorry state of affairs
Lets hope sainsburys dont run out of diesel tonight-passfield needs it!

The generators that have been left running the area, may well be here until Thursday, we have been told.
The problem is a major underground cable fault.
Once repaired we will suffer a further power outage (during the day hopefully) when the generators are disconnected and the 'mains' supply reconnected to the transformers. This could be another period of a few hours.

The brochure which explains how to claim and how much for is call “Electricity Network Operator Guaranteed Standards” the link is here:
www.southern-electric.co.uk/...
We need to give our name/address and dates of the interruptions.
Claims Administration,
Scottish & Southern Electic,

Phone : 0845 7708090
Main fuse – If the main fuse between the incoming supply cable and your meter fails, your network operator will attend within 3 hours on a working day if you notify them between 7am and 7pm and within 4 hours if you contact them between 9am and 5pm on bank holidays or at weekends. Supply restoration: severe weather conditions – If your electricity supply fails during severe weather because of a problem on the distribution system, your network operator will restore it within a prescribed period. The length of time that applies depends on the number of faults and how many customers are affected and varies from at least 24 hours without supply to more than 48 hours. Well after 4 days with no central heating ,5 households are now having new boilers fitted today, including mine.
The cost of this power problem in passfield is steadily going up by the day..2 of us have broken microwaves, my neighbour has a broken washing machine, numerous households have fried routers, I've had to buy a new housephone, we've lost food in our freezers, we've had to incur the costs of running electric fan and immersion heaters.
Can't wait for the boilers to fire up-4 days with no heat going through frozen pipes could cause yet more complications.
Southern electric had better raid their piggy bank..as claim forms will be coming in thick and fast.

Hiya,
Yes are there any Electrical Engineers out there to explain all this.
The first I knew anything else was wrong was after resetting all our electric clocks on resumption of power was that I overslepted. Did I set it wrong or was the clock on the blink? Then I discovered all my electric clocks were wrong.
The later that day our washing machine broke - overheating - not turning - looking like it's going to catch fire. Luckily the wife was home and noticing the burning smell switched it off. Otherwise I dread to think what wer would have come home to.
It was only by talking to our good neighbours that we discovered they had the same problems. Cocks all wrong and another broken washing machine. At least they had actually succeeded in getting the Electric guys out who simply confirmed we were getting 240 volts so what was the problem? Clearly guys it is a big problem!!!!

Re: Passfield Power Cut
- nikki (10th Dec 2008 14:42:33)
yes dawn , we were told southern elec would turn the generator off for a little while because they were working with our boiler company in getting all 5 households back on with heating..they were carrying out some tests.
Just been told the new boilers won't be turned on until the whole area is back on mains supply.

Re: Passfield Power Cut
- nikki (10th Dec 2008 21:28:55)
those who have working washing machines/cookers/microwaves might like to know that because we're on a generator we're not getting the power that the mains kicks out.
As i've just found out..the washing machine is running on a very limited speed hence the laundry coming out in the same state it went in (just about to do a load by hand...good grief)...my electric oven took an extra half hour to cook dinner and the immersion tank (currently our only means of hot water) is taking a lot longer to heat up.
All this combined with no central heating or a means to dry any washing (the tumble dryer isn't heating up very well) ..amounts to probably one of the most stressful weeks we've had in a long time!
Down to the laundrette tomorrow! (and then the pub I think!)

Can we get, or have we got an incident number for the whole situation from Southern Electric? Given that there are going to be claims for at least 5 boilers, 4 washing machines (including mine) and various other things, I think it may help if we can all quote the same incident when we make the claims.
Also, are people getting things fixed and then claiming the cost, or claiming and getting a reference number and then getting the work done?

Re: Passfield Power Cut
- nikki (11th Dec 2008 09:31:41)
The advice I have been given Sue is to wait until we are all back on mains supply, leave it for a few days to see how the electrical equipment settles down and if anymore problems arise during that time.
Then ring southern elec for a claim form.

all our bedside alarm clocks have broken, can we claim for them Nikki?
I am getting really annoyed by all the little cuts. I just had a loaf of bread ruined when the oven turned off, and I don't know what to do with the washing machine which is off but still full of water and laundry.
blast...blast..blast..
I wish they would give us some notice when they are going to unplug the generator.

I do sympathise with you folks out there.
I feel these supply companies should stick notices in those doors that are without a service for any time.
Last week, we had no running water at 10pm, due to a burst - not the end of the world, but when not prepared for it makes simple things awkard.
The next day the supply was intermittant, and prior to having a shower, checked all the water was on. By the time I was under the water - it went very hot, and the blasted water had been turned off!!. 10 minutes later, after hopping and skipping and giving up it was back on. Just a quick note to explain would have been helpful!

Hi, thanks to whoever dropped in the Local Talkback literature, very interesting.
I think something really needs to be done about all these power cuts. I kept a list of these on our calendar and there were six incidents of lengthy power cuts from November 2007 to January 2008. The reply we received from Southern Electric was not helpful at all, and basically avoiding the issue completely and were not prepared to offer compensation.
We are very frustrated and feel that the fault should be rectified, otherwise we will just continue to experience further power cuts. What steps as a community can be taken to get this matter solved?

I must admit our washing machine has packed up so will be making a claim. Just hope they accept it. Will call them tomorrow to find out what we do and post the info on here for others. Has anyone raised a claim yet with the power company.

Has anyone had success with making a claim. Our two fridge freezers are now on the blink, I've had to throw the whole contents of our freezer in the garage in the bin and the one in the kitchen is up to full capacity and still not that cold. I have written Scottish & Southern Energy and waiting for them to come back to me next week. This has only happened since being put on the generator.
