Power Cut
- Sumi Olson (27th Nov 2008 - 11:38:33)
Does anyone know what happened early this morning? We had a power cut that even affected the street lights - we were aware of it from around 5.40am and the power didn't come on again until almost 7 am.
We're used to the annoyingly frequent but fairly short power outages but we've not had anything this major at our end of Liphook for a while...
[editor - I think all power cuts will affect the street lights]

Think yourself lucky Sumi. It is now 3pm and some of us still dont have power. There is apparently a major fault and the rumour going around my neighbours is that it might not be fixed today. I have just seen some generator lorries roll past my house so I am a bit more optimistic than them. Here's hoping!

Hi
Thanks for the update - definitely was lucky compared to James. The thing is I'd seen the first episode of Survivors where the world is devasted by a virus and all power is cut off. Made me think how dependent we are on electricity in our house from heating, to the cooker, kettle and apart from our wide up radio, the news...
What's the rule about refunds when there's lack of supply for an extended period, James? Surely you and your neighbours qualify? BTW, didn't occur to me about the street lights before as the cuts are mostly during the day!

The power came back on at about 4.30 in the end. I hadn't thought about refunds Sumi. Its a good point. It is amazing how much we rely on electricity, its not until its gone that you realise though.
By the way, John you were nearly right... I was using my mobile phone to logon to this site. :-)

Well Sumi, according to an article in the Daily Mail today, it is possible to charge up batteries using onions and Lucozade....so if the Survivors scenario happened for real we could try that for certain things, like lap tops (apparently). You do need to use rather a lot of them, though!!
For everything else like eating and heating we would have to use fires and I guess boy scouts would come in handy, if they still learn to light them by rubbing sticks....

Hi All
Whilst you are watching 'I'm a D listed celebrity fill my bank account', bear a thought for me with one hell of a large electricity generator outside my back garden droning on all day and night.
Haven't slept since last thursday...'I'm not a celebrity get me out of this village'
Have a good day
