Bohunt Manor Estate Artefacts
- Heritage Centre (6th Jan 2014 - 10:36:29)
The Liphook Heritage Centre is pleased to announce that there is now an exhibition of historical artefacts found over a number of years on the Bohunt Manor Estate Liphook when it was the residence of Sir Adrian and Lady Holman.
The display of artefacts is very extensive and includes a Bronze Age axe head, a Celtic coin, many Roman coins, Roman pottery shards, several medieval coins from King Canute’s reign to Elizabeth I reign, coins from James I through to George III, 19th and 20th century coins, 17th century Jews harps, trade tokens and a collection of 19th century musket balls!!
There is evidence that the Estate was the site of Roman occupation possibly with a Roman villa located near to the current Manor House.
The exhibits in the display have been clearly laid out for our visitors to appreciate the extent of history on this important site so close to the heart of Liphook, but within the South Downs National Park.
The Liphook Heritage Centre at the Millennium Centre First Floor is open from 10.00am to noon on Mondays and Fridays and from 2.00pm to 4.00pm on Wednesdays.
There is access to the first floor by a lift if it is difficult for visitors to negotiate the stairs.
Further information about The Heritage Centre may be obtained by visiting the Heritage Centre web site www.liphookheritage.org.uk, emailing liphookheritage@btconnect.com or telephoning 01428 727275 during opening hours.

I would also love to see these but can't get there at the opening times because of working. Is there any chance the Heritage Centre could do a special opening on a Saturday morning?

Many thanks to the Heritage Centre and it's volunteers for this special opening.
Fascinating displays and information from both Bohunt Manor and other areas of Liphook. It will be a great loss if Bohunt is developed without further archaeological investigation.

Very interesting displays and a big thank you for opening in the evening. I had no idea there was the possibility of a Roman villa in Liphook. Presumably there is no hope of it being investigated further?

I also went along last night and would like to echo your thanks to the volunteers who opened up the Heritage Centre last night. A fascinating exhibition and very busy!
The artefacts were astonishing from a bronze age axe head to a Roman brooch and coins dating back centuries. It was interesting to find out where all these artefacts were found - right across Bohunt Manor - and the history attached to them. Napoleonic musket balls for example which indicate soldiers from the Napoleonic wars being on that site for a period of time. I loved the story of the thimbles (lots of them) which were found scattered around the trees at the end of the drive. These were traditionally placed around trees by girls hoping to find a good husband :-)
Liz - the South Downs National Park Authority have said that because of these artefacts that a full archaeological survey must be carried out before anything can be built on site. Hopefully that means that if there is a Roman villa there it will be investigated further. Everything seems to indicate it is a possibility.
The following link takes you to a letter from the SDNPA which on page 2 talks about the cultural heritage and the need to investigate it.

Hi Jane
Can you check that letter, as I suspect that there is a page missing between page 2 and page 3
Page 2 ends
....the activities proposed at construction stage.
Then page 3 starts
can be found in:
..........
I think there is another page which discusses matters like drainage.

I would urge anyone interested in local history to visit this exhibition - I went on the last evening opening and it was great! Lots to look at and not just relating to Bohunt Manor.
My daughter and I had great fun looking through all the photos of Liphook in days gone by and recognising local places and people (particularly in the LiDBA bike ride!).
Because of these fascinating finds an archaeological survey will now need to be carried out before any planning permission for housing can be granted on Bohunt Manor land.
Please also visit www.sosbohuntmanor.co.uk if you want to find out more about the proposed plans for Bohunt Manor land in the South Downs National Park.
