Railway station ticket office opening
- Tracey H (21st Nov 2008 - 09:27:15)

I know that Network Rail are planning to reduce the opening hours of our station ticket office. However, the current opening of the office has become so erratic and irrational as to beggar belief.

I normally buy my London ticket in advance the day before to avoid the queues. Unfortunately the ticket machine will not issue the return single from London to Liphook that I need, so I have to use the counter.

As we all know, there are two trains an hour during the day, both within 10 minutes of eachother on the hour and 9 mins past the hour , so you would expect the office to be open before these arrive. Last week however, when I got there (carefully timed) at 1.00pm, there was a note on the window saying it would be open again at 1.10pm - one minute after the London train had left !! - due to a shift change.

I waited patiently (for another 15 mins as it happened), and when the clerk opened up, I asked him what times he opened normally (as whenever I go, it seem to be shut). The answer left me gobsmacked. He said that they are normally open between 15 and 45 mins past each hour during the day.

That is precisely when there are no trains stopping and no-one needs the ticket office!!

What sort of organisation is it that allows shift changes to disrupt customer service so substantially as this?

I do wonder if this is all a ploy to try and prove that no-one buys tickets over the counter at Liphook, as the office is never open when needed.

It also seems to shut much earlier than the advertised times - on one occasion I was actually shooed away when I tried to open the door at 5.30pm, by the staff member (a different one who shall remain nameless) who was actually inside the ticket hall at the time.

Has anyone else had similar experiences?

South west trains decide when the ticket office opens not Networkrail ,

Mmmmmmmmm

I agree, the more the service deteriorates at Liphook, the higher the revenues at Haslemere.

~Coincidence?
