Hi Ellen,

I can't lend you my sewing machine as it is in almost constant use - but I can let you use it at my house if you can't find one.

Have you tried the Alton Sewing centre?

The shop closed about 2years ago, but he still works out of his garage or equivalent. Perhaps he does second-hand ones.

I have my mothers old one, but I could not work out the tension properly, and gave up!

I have no idea how good it is, but she used it regularly.

Have hung onto it for sentimental reasons, but we have to clear out our loft, and noticed it up there at the weekend, so now is as good a time to let go. I am sure she would have liked it to go to someone who will use it!

If it was my choice, I would go for an old Singer - rather than the modern plastic alternative. You quite often get them being sold at jumbles / car boots etc.

You could always try e-bay?

Well that’s a funny coincidence. In my loft is also my mums first machine - a singer manual, in wooden box - with key!!

I am going to keep it, as it is much more to look at, rather ‘special’.

ellen!

just read your post about buying new... i would seriously re-consider this unless you are willing to pay lots for it. I have had 2 new machines and both are NOTHING in comparison to my mum's machine that is 20 years old. Hers is a Frister+Rossman Panda 5 and is FANTASTIC! my current one is a Jansom (cost £400!!) and is 10 years old and many more 'added extras' but is not a patch on the Frister+rossman.

Hope that helps!! if you buy new make sure you have a good test and go for the heavier footing rather than the bells and whistles!

good luck!

Hi

Was on ebay for something else and put in a search for tailor's dummy - there are loads! Even when I restricted the search to a 25m radius for a local pick up. There's a choice of men and women's dummies so I hope you'll find something of use.

BTW - If later this year someone wants to set up a sewing machine /clothes-making class, say in the village hall then PLEASE count me in!!!!!

I did learn at school about 25 years ago and want to get back into it. I've a machine gathering dust waiting for me to use it...

Good luck with your hunt and hope ebay works out for you.
