HINDHEAD TUNNEL CLOSURE
- Bill Ratcliffe (14th Dec 2013 - 11:36:35)
When the plans for the Hindhead Tunnel were being discussed, I remember the debate regarding keeping the old A3 open in case the tunnel was closed as there is no good diversionary route.
On balance, I favoured the closure of the old A3 in order to enhance the attraction of the Devil's Punch Bowl, but this support was given because of reassurances that it was highly unlikely that both tunnels would have to close at the same time. I seem to remember a once in ten years forecast.
I have lost count of the number of times the tunnel has been completely closed. Last night both tunnels were closed again and local traffic to Liphook was prevented from using the A3 as all traffic from Portsmouth was then off at Bordon.
The diversionary routes are not fit for purpose and add an inordinate amount of time to both North and South bound journeys. I understand the South bound queue was 8 miles last night (Friday).
Have we an explanation of why the Tunnel does not seem to be fit for purpose?

Just been to Guildford and back and even though the signs said tunnel closed it wasn't. Took the chance and followed a few other brave souls and basically had the A3 to myself. Sweet!

It is still a relatively rare occurrence to have both sides closed. I work in Woking and am just so massively grateful every day for the hours of queueing it saves me.

Warning for this Saturday night.
Yet again they are closing both lanes at the same time in the tunnel, rather than closing one at a time and creating a two lane highway in each side!!!! So if you are going for an evening out in Guildford (or coming home from your night shift) remember to come home via Farnham.
the notice says:
Both the northbound and southbound A3, between Longmoor and the Hogs Back, will be closed for 1 night on Saturday 7 February 2015 to carry out final testing, verification and certification of the Hindhead tunnel electricity supply and control systems, following the work that was completed in December 2014.
The closure will be in place between 9pm on Saturday 7 February 2015 until 9am on Sunday 8 February 2015. Both bores of the A3 Hindhead tunnel will be closed while the work is carried out.
Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place via the A31 and A325 for long distance traffic.
Local traffic will be diverted:
A3 Hazel Grove to Thursley diversion via the A333 and A287 to join the strategic diversion at Farnham. A3 Thursley to Hazel Grove diversion via the northbound A3, B300 to the strategic diversion on the A31 and then the A287

You can actually drive over the top, interesting experience, done it once, but wouldn't like to meet someone coming the other way!
