Power cut
- Alan Baker (8th Nov 2008 - 14:50:00)

Hi

Just wondered if anybody else suffered from equipment failure this morning caused by the power surges / cuts overnight ?

Came down this morning to discover the oven flashing ALL it's lights (not just the clock) and one of the fans running all the time.

The manaufacturer say £140 for the new electronic controller and £90 to fit.

Would be interested to know if it was only me that had an expensive problem !

Hi Alan,

Had no problems at all. Everything working fine (except me of course, but that's usual).

It may be a coincidence but the contol unit on my central heating has gone haywire today with random operation. Never gave he power cut a thought as to being the possible culprit until I saw the post.

All my IT and TV/audio equipment is protected by anti - surge units - never thought of fitting one to the heating panel feed and other domestic appliances - will wait and see what the plumber has to say on Monday.

Graham...HOW did you get a plumber so FAST!.....PLEASE could I have his number!

I'm afraid that I cheated a bit.

I was persuaded by Southern Water a while ago to take out an insurance to cover my heating system with a company called Homeserve - one phone call resulted in a recommended plumber contacting me within two hours and agreeing a convenient time. Whilst I did at first wonder if it was worth it (about £100 per annum) it now appears to be paying dividends as all parts and labour are covered and the potentially worst aspect - finding a plumber - was not a problem.

Mind you - the proof of the pudding will become apparent after his visit.

Sorry.

[Editor - will be interesting to see if the 'plumbing insurance' covers the electrical wiring]

The Plumber/Heating Engineer turned up dead on time as promised.

Unfortunately, the system had settled down and worked properly on Sunday which meant that it was a diagnostic nightmare. The plumber was not surprised and confirmed my thoughts that the fault probably lay with the control box which had now self rectified. He checked the box and all associated wiring - the only possible cause of the problem that he could find was that the control box was protected by a 5 amp fuse which he replaced with the correct 3 amp which may have blown and thus protected the control box.

It would appear that the coverage is from the power source through the control box to the boiler via the pump - it does not cover radiators, etc. I must admit that this is not clear from the "small print" and is only my experience. I would suggest that anyone thinking of taking out such a policy should check that it covers all their requirements and not take my experience as normal.

Before departing, the plumber checked airflow, gasflow, ventilation and flue operation.

Ouch ! ...I feel for you , I too had expensive repercussions following power loss/surge some years ago. I now have surge protectors EVERYWHERE :)
