The Army ranges and WH Club
- Sue W (5th Nov 2008 - 13:13:40)

I thought I would start a new version of one that has appeared here before - the situation of Whitehill Club and the 'Army Land' aka Woolmer Forest.

While walking the dog today, came across a gentleman who looks after longmoor one & 2. He was trimming back some hedges, and we had a good chat about the whole area.

This land is not OWNED by the MOD, but by a private estate. They have been granted use for training purposes only for as long as they need it. This happened around 1850's ish. If the army move away it will revert to the original family.

Volunteers controlled by a conservation group and not army employees do most of the work carried out on the area.

On the cycling issue he too confirmed that it was not permitted and said that about 10 years ago they were heavily sued by a mountain biker!

On my return I asked if he knew about the situation of Whitehill Club, as this was on land classed as part of the 'Army'. He wasn’t too sure of the exact situation, but when I asked him if it had anything to do with Lord Selbourne (as mentioned by Steve previously)- he said that the landowner who pledged it to the Army was indeed Lord Selbourne!

From a Liphook point of view this may not be relevant, but is does take out the fear that the council would adopt it and build along side the A3!

Yes, I thought the cycling ban was down to some litigious twerp. [I wish people would take responsibility for their own actions instead of trying to blame somebody else all the time.]

I had thought that the end was in sight regarding the club, but everything seems to have ground to a halt once more. It is such a shame as the structure that is there now will have to be demolished as the elements will have made it unsound. What a ridiculous waste of money!

Also, I don't think it is off topic. It is a local eyesore, I drive past it all the time and tut!

Drove by the club today, it is all being demolished.

It is such a shame that only half a building was constructed (probably at very great cost) only to be demolished (also at great cost).

Still, as least it will remove an eyesore. Does anyone know the future proposals for the site?

There was an article on this weeks 'Messenger' re: the future of Whitehill Club. I was surprised to read that there is still an appointed club secretary! That must be an easy task...

As for the cycle ban when they say its not 'permitted' basically means that a blind eye is turned if you're seen to be acting sensibly. Many times the range warden has driven past me and not said a word. It was a women from Liss who fell off and broke her ankle, sucessfully suing the MOD. The (then) CO at LTDA quite rightly took away the MODs approval of cycling in the area. This allows the MOD to not be liable for any injuries.
