Well at least Bush was actually elected by the US people in the first place, so they only had themselves to blame, whereas Gordon........!!!

I heard that Bush was chasing Moses for advice for the last 4 years but Moses wouldn't speak to him. He said that the last time he spoke to a Bush he ended spending 40 days in the wilderness !!!!! Maybe Gordon will suffer the same fate ....

Had to put things right - firstly Finchie yes you are right it is a great day - obama now has a great progressive mandate for change after 8 years of right wing mismanagement.
However our UK system is different to the US - we elect a party not an individual. The Labour Party was elected for a five year term based on their manifesto in 2005 - it is this manifesto that Gordon Brown is governing on therefore he has a mandate.
Eneida you will have your choice in June 2010 - assuming the tories can raise enough 'Russian' funds to put up a decent campaign...........

Well John, I cannot believe there will be many detractors on the central point you make. Possibly it is true that the entire population of the democratic world will welcome the "change" promised by B. A. , but what, specifically is the "change" he is referring to?
I have a funny feeling that within a very short period of taking office in January that it will be business as usual.
I hope I am wrong, but how is he going to change the antipathy felt by muslims towards our society, for whatever reason, which we simply do not understand.(or if we do, we do not have the will or wit to address)
He needs to develope a working relationship with Russia. How on earth can valuable national and international resources be allowed to squandered in the name of national vanity. We need a healthy trading relashionship with all of the countries formerly under the Soviet umbrella, especially Russia.
Does he have the vision to create circumstances in Iraq and Afghanistan whereby they can be left to self governance without their societies imploding if U.S. & U.K. troops withdraw strategically or abandon as a lost cause. Can he understand that America simply cannot police the globe?
Change, quoth he, as if it were understood by all. But what change? Will he have the political brio to engage Russia as an equal partner in our future financial wellbeing or will he succumb to the old them and us scenario which resulted today with the Prime Minister of Russia stating that they would programme missiles just east of Poland in response to the USA placing so called Star Wars interception hardware there.
Will he have the nous to recognise that the vast majority of the population of Planet Earth could not give a monkeys about early warning systems but would prefer to see united international action to relieve the poverty and hardship endured by so many. Don't even think about nuking Moscow, employ your resources to effectively change the lives of those who need it .
I hope that President Obama, as the most powerful man in international politics, has the ability to "change" a lot of old world backward values in what are un certain times. I wait with baited breathe and anticipation!!

Heavens! I feel the soil beneath my feet rumbling. I confess willingly that I thought the man had no chance agin the old established wisdoms. I truely believe I was wrong to doubt the self belief B A clearly has in himself, to force the changes required to make things happen that could not happen under the previous admin.
Jeez, he even wants to "engage" with the Iranian President on what his problems and perceptions are vis-a-vis anything.
Ok, so it's early days, but can anybody remember any of his predecessors talking such sense (might, of course, prove to be shite in the end, 5 years hence )
In one day, the worlds expectations changed, he looks up to the challenge

Allan I am impressed with your ideas, I have a few thoughts - that Bush's family are very wealthy, and that their wealth is tied up with oil. Their oil interests I believe are mainly in the Middle East. Control of oil in that region to Americans is all important, not the people living there. I have also heard that The first gulf war did not end as it should because Saudi Arabia were not happy with the Americans in control by killing Saddam Hussein the first time. Now that the Government here has been forced to release papers relating to cabinet meetings, perhaps we will be confronted with the truth of the matter. George Bush had prepared for a spring invasion of Iraq long before the chemical weapons had been conveniently"Found". Bush also had the finance to launch his political ambitions, without a mandate from the people, wheras Obamas campaign was launched with very tiny online donations which shows he had massive popular support.
With regard to the muslims, the worst possible word Bush used was CRUSADE. Apparently the crusades of the middle ages are still a very sore point there, and it appears that as History is being re-examined now, the crusades were less to do with Christianity and more to do with control and money to be forund in that region. Nothing much changes!.
