Fireworks - Warning ...
- Finchie (3rd Nov 2008 - 00:10:44)
Very rarely do I issue "health" or consumer warnings, but I feel compelled to warn my fellow villagers against purchasing the most disappointing firework I have ever seen ....
My wife bought what we thought would be a reasonable box of tricks from Countrywide last week - It was 25 or 30 quid - and I was dead chuffed as it was a buy one get one free (yes I am the one that comes home from Sainsburies with the 3 biggest boxes of cornflakes when it is buy 2 get one free - my wife goes nuts as we have nowhere to put them).
This firework was the "30 shot fan battery". The detail of effects were "Green, purple and blue stars with gold willow, timed rain and silver palm".
To celebrate "begging" night, I assembled hordes of nephews, nieces - some had travelled great distances.
I had selected my 3 minute Vivaldi music for accompaniment - as I had hoped the "30 shot fan battery" to last at least that long.
There was a heavy weight of expectation, as this annual event has got bigger of the years, and as the kids have got older I can no longer get away with a pack of 10 sparklers.
To say it was over quickly was an understatement. The description of the "detail of effects" had neglected to state that the lovely green purple and blue stars with gold willow, time rain and silver palm - all go off within a total elapsed time of 2 seconds.
I now know how my wife felt on that special night !
One sensible in-law advised me not to return to the firework to re-light it - they though it had not quite gone off properly and remained unconviced when I said "that was probably it".
Luckily we had the spare "free" one to light to get the proper display. The second performance was equally short and disappointing (unlike mine :-) ).
I would recommend you take both fireworks back before using them and swap them for their large pack of fireworks (also buy one get one free).
If I had the energy I would pursue whoever under the trades description act - rather than the "30 shot fan battery" it should be called the "2 second, rainbow blur".
You have been warned.
Still all was not lost - nothing would cheer us up better than "Friday Night with Jonathan Ross" - Ah - that cunning plan didn't work either.
Cheers, Finchie
PS I would particularly like to hear from all those that oppose the despicable celebration that Guy Fawkes FAILED to blow up the houses of parliament. I think we should ban it - far too dangerous and too much fun. And why should we celebrate failure anyway - would have been better if he had succeeded.

Should have gone to Asda. I bought a box of Garden Fireworks which also meant I got 4 rockets and a couple of packs of long sparklers for total sum of £23.00.
OK it wasn't spectacular but it produced a few oohs and aahs from me and the children. Nearly lost my husband a couple of times as the rockets returned to earth and landed about 2 inches from his head but there you go....
