Youth Forum
- Freddie Dawkins (25th May 2004 - 17:02:06)
Dear All -
Last night I was elected Chairman for the Parish Council's Youth Forum.
I've been working with The Beacon youth facility for some months now and have got to know the Church and County Council Youth Team workers quite well - along with about 20 regular attendees.
I was involved a couple of years ago, in getting the skate park up and running behind the library.
Are there any burning issues you'd like to raise with me? I'll schedule a formal Youth Forum meeting as soon as I can - will probably be early part of July. But in the meantime, I'd like to have ideas/comments/thoughts from you, to help me set the initial agenda.
Thx
Freddie

Ok Freddie lets start from the top.
What does it mean, what powers/influence (if any) do you have, and what's the scope of your responsibilities?

Hello, Alex -
You? Neighbour from Hell? Surly (sic) not!;-)))
The Youth Forum should be an inclusive platform for debate leading to proposed actions, financed/backed by the Parish Council.
The Council has access to various funds of money.
We need to hear from the younger citizens what they want, why they want it and how/where they would like it.
I'd like discussion/ideas at this stage, so that I can refine the outline agenda for the first open meeting, which I will propose for end-June or end-July. This will be the first time the Youth Forum has met for more than a year. I've learnt a lot over the past months from being involved in The Beacon. But I feel like I'm getting too old to really appreciate what's now needed - so I'm relying on inputs from the potential USERS to set the agenda.
There has been talk for a long time now about building a BMX track. We can do this now. There was talk in the past about building a swimming pool - that could be done quite soon.
But what about the smaller stuff? More nights at The Beacon? More trips out from Liphook? More organised activities in the Rec?...
Look forward to contributions here.

Good Grief Alex!!
Have you just woken from hibernation??
I don't think you are being a killjoy at all, as an older "wimmin" I think you are being an obnoxious , ageist little s***!! Get back in your pram.

awwww thanks Eneida ;)
Not hibernating, just very busy. Spent most of last week at the broadcast production show networking my little bum off. Strangely enough this former neighbour from hell was in Parliament last week at the latest PITCOM meeting (parliamentary IT committee), arguing with BT and Stephen Timms about their lack of vision for broadband in the UK. I was easy to spot - the whizzkid, and the only one wearing flared jeans instead of a double-breasted suit!
I'm curious about Freddie's new role actually, as i was asked recently for potential ways to sort out the Sainsbury's kids. There was quite a list (CCTV, ASBOs), but my favourite was employing a cameraman (and security guard) to film them all night, everywhere they went, and then send the video to their parents.....

Hallo Freddie.
I hope everything is well with you.
I agree with the suggestions made by residents at Tuesdays meeting. Liphook needs a youth centre for the teenagers of the village. I have spoken to some of the teenagers and they wanted somewhere they can "chill out". Maybe if the youth centre also have a pool table and a few computers it would be great. Oh, and don't forget the cafe environment. Great idea. I am prepared to do a few hours a week as I help my husband to run our business from home. It might just solve the problem with the teenagers at Sainsbury. Oh and maybe if the TEENAGERS aren't treated like idiots they might stop behaving as such. I think they are misunderstood and that some elderly folks around here have to remember that they used to be teenagers too...a very long time ago.
I think that bit of land next to the Millenium hall is perfect.
Oh, and a swimming pool would be great too. I have spoken to an older resident on Wednesday and she said that, quite a few years ago the residents of Liphook did collect money for a swimming pool at Bohunt centre. What happened to that money? Just asking.
Greetings from
Tina

Tina -
We do have a pool table, computers, games, air hockey, crafts, kitchen, hot and cold drinks and snacks etc etc.
So most of what you are suggesting is already there and has been for a couple of years, thanks to HCC, the Parish Council, the Church and several individuals who have generously helped.
Jan Scard (HCC Youth Service) and the absolute gem of a team leader who has made the whole thing work - sometimes through difficult periods - would be delighted to have more volunteers. At the moment, she and Alec Gill (Church-sponsored Youth Worker) are short staffed and one Mum in particular is doing more than her fair share at the moment.
Please call Jan on 01420 487056 and have a word with her.

Count my kids in for the swimming pool idea. Difficult to make it financially viable, I've been told. But no-one's done any analysis, I suspect, since all the new people - with all those extra kids - moved into Liphook in the last couple of years. And it would be nice to have somewhere for all us old people to go when we can no longer get to London to work because SWT have cancelled all the early morning trains (see separate string)!

Tina
Haven't you learnt by now - teenagers LIKE being "misunderstood" (I know I did at that age).
If they thought the oldies understood them, they'd all go into a deep depression.
Don't try to deprive them of one of their greatest enjoyments!!
