carols
- Susie (18th Nov 2013 - 20:25:44)
Does anyone know if it's on this year?
We've usually had some info about it by now and it's a tradition all my family enjoy.

Carols in The Square, Liphook will be on Monday 16th December starting at 7.00pm.
Father Christmas will be there, ably assisted by his Liphook in Bloom elves!

Apologies for being negative but isn't this a school night?
I would love my children (6 and 4) to come to this event, particularly to see Santa, but by the time this ends they will be dead tired and irritable for school in the morning.
Can't this be held on Friday 20th so they can catch up their lost sleep over the weekend or the 13th?
Or is event only aimed at families with grown up children?

It's at 7pm.... I feel like the majority of parents will have no problem with this timing, kids will be in bed again by 8! Get a grip!

Idiots!!
I rarely moan unlike some people I see on this forum.
Pardon me for worrying about my children\\\'s welfare.
6.00PM would have been OK.
AND I am not someone who moans at just anything.
Once again IDIOTS!!!!!!

Really grown up discussion! Increasingly some users of this site seems to be struggling with the concept of mature debate

It's Christmas - good will to all men and all that!!
Tell the kids they are going to see Santa and they have to go to bed half hour early on Sunday and on Tuesday to make up for not going to bed till late on Monday and that Santa and his elves are watching if they don't! It's win win for you mum, you get two early nights and an enjoyable evening with your kids on Monday.
Sorted!

Quite right Karen, as if it's going to make that much difference for a slightly later bedtime last week of the holidays!

To 'S' who can't be bothered to put their name down to justify their comments, please supply the poll of parents they contacted that had no problem with the timing of this event. We all know there won't be any.
To 'Carrie' I am very happy for the 7.00pm setting but not on a school night. Kids would be well excited. In bed at 8.00pm? Yes. Asleep, NO!
To others....mature debate? lol give me a break.
I answered this post initially with an apology because I would like my boys to attend but for the lateness. With this sort of people attending I think I will abstain.
And you wonder why there is a dearth of interest in 'village' activities? go figure!

'G'?????
'S'?????
What's wrong with you people?
Are you having difficulty spelling your name?
'Scrooge'?
Its obvious you haven't seen the film as I don't recall seeing anything in the film about kids going to bed late.
If you're going to quote a reference at least get it right.

Rob
The event is, and always has been, well supported and the atmosphere is fantastic. No children,as far as I am aware, have suffered adversely by attending!
To answer your initial question though, I would say it is primarily a carol service, which may not finish that early, so is perhaps best suited to adults and older children.

Hi Rob
The carols are organised by volunteers with the help of Liphook in bloom, the Liphook firemen, and the haslemere town band, many of whom work. There are free mince pies, mulled wine and soup for which most people give a donation to the charities being collected for on the night. Why don't you leave your children at home this year with a responsible adult and volunteer to help with the collection or dispensing the free soup etc. That way you will see how much hard work goes into organising it and help the community too.
Santa also visits the junior school too, there is normally a live nativity scene run at the weekend by the local church, and a local panto so lots of other things you can take your young children to this year and then next year take them to the carols for something different when they are a bit older.
There are many successful and busy local events so stop griping and join in the fun!
Merry Christmas

I am happy to share my name though I don't feel it is particularly relevant.
I just feel like some people will find a problem with anything on here, and you seem a prime example 'Rob' (wonder why you don't share your surname).
The carols are a lovely event kindly organised by volunteers many of whom have, I'm sure, had small children themselves. Maybe it's interesting to note that no one else has come forward to moan about the 7pm, school night timing of this event.
I suppose I find it bizarre that some people are so tied to their routine that a small degree of flexibility in the week before Christmas can cause such unnecessary outrage.

I don't know what all the fuss is about. Carols in The Square has been on a Monday shortly before Christmas at 7pm for many years. The volunteers work hard to provide the facility for people to come together, sing carols, enjoy season food provided by local bussinesses and friends and generally enjoy the real spirit of Christmas. Of course it doesn't suit everybody but come along if you can on Monday 16th December and spread some festive cheer. This event is another great example of the wealth of goodwill that exists within our village and is a lovely evening.

Hi Carole
I applaud your sentiments totally.
Whilst the timing of the event (IMHO) is not right for my children at the moment it is for many others and I hope that they thoroughly enjoy themselves and have a great night out.
The discussion was getting very personal and away from the subject in hand despite my opening comment with an apology.
Perhaps in later years, we as a family can join in this festive occasion. I look forward to it.

That's more like it. Healthy debate and polarised views. Much more entertaining start to the weekend.
Happy weekend and happy Christmas (that feels so wrong to say today !!!).
I hope I can make it, as I feel I can contribute. *clears throat* "I'm walking in the air ...."
Cheers, Finchie
