BOHUNT:shame on you
- k (15th Nov 2013 - 18:08:52)
So,once again Bohunt do absolutely nothing for Children In Need! What is their problem? I know they have their own house charities, but come on,surely they could have had a non uniform day for £1.00. I know many children as well as my own were very disappointed that the school chose not support such a great cause. Even during the week, when pupils asked about this, they were met with silence from teachers. Surely, the powers that be at Bohunt can't watch the main Children In Need programme tonight (15th November) without feeling just a little bit guilty?

Bohunt cant be expected to support every charity. They raise an exceptional amount for their chosen charities and should be praised for that. If you want to support children in need there are plenty opportunitues for you to do so, dont blame bohunt for taking a back seat.

My Son, went to Bohunt and very often took part in the non uniform, he was insistent in using the £1 yes only £1 from his pocket money to pay for it.
I have been watching the show and was actually in tears when the death of the 2 little boys was on.
I would be happy for £1 to be given from my own money to support something that helps children that are really in need. A dying child given a chance to enjoy the little bit of life that he/she had, this is also a blessing to the parents as they can say goodbye and at least know that their child(ren) went up stairs with the love and care that they deserved
I am going to write a formal letter to the school and take it in. I am really upset and I mean upset that a school which is there for the community wants money yet cant do a small charity event which would raise £1200 approx for children in need. would look a lot better in the press and to the parents to see how much they raised!!!
I am soo angry, the kids wanted to take part and the teachers whom are there to teach them fell silent!! I know some of the teachers and know that they will not be happy with the not taking part.
My own work place managed to do something and they are all old fuddy duddies and raised a around £100 which helps

K I totally totally agree with you. It is disgusting and it would be interesting to see what the press would say...... I'm a parent with young children and Thankfully they aren't aware how cruel the world can be sometimes. When national events such as Children In Need take place it's important for children to take part and realise how lucky they are. How cruel and unfortunate life can be. Children can help other children whatever age and Bohunt have a moral responsibility in encouraging that. Teaching the school children how lucky they are. Yes we can all donate privately, but schools can help from a community point of view of pulling together.

I don't see what there is to be ashamed of. Supporting CIN is not compulsory you know (although sometimes it may seem that way, what with all the hype surrounding it)!

Bohunt is not the only local school that didn't 'do' anything for Children in Need! There is nothing stopping these children/parents donating their own pocket money or wages, or by fund raising by holding a cake sale by their front gate etc.
Bohunt do already raise funds for charity. It is not compulsory for them to participate.

Just because Children in Need gets massive press coverage doesn't mean Bohunt, or any school, has to support it. I don't think any individual or organisation should be made to feel they have to support a charity because it's splashed all over the media. Giving to charity is a very personal choice.
Bohunt do support and raise a lot of money for their chosen charities. They also give hundreds of hours of voluntary work per year to the local community through lots of students participating in the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.
This kind of criticism I feel is really unjust.

Extraordinary, hysterical criticism of an excellent school for no good reason.

On balance K's comment seems vexatious and I for one won't be dignifying this thread by any further comments.

Phil, just for the record,my work colleagues and I dressed up for the day. Both ourselves and our customers had a very entertaining day and have so far raised over £1000 with more still to come. We even donated from our pockets just to take part, but was worth every penny! I also donated via text to the One Show's Rickshaw Challenge. The point I was trying to make was that Bohunt could have also raised a significant amount with little effort on their part and I'm sure their house charities would not suffer as a result, as I am aware of the good work they do!

It just seems to me it is very poor show to publically highlight any organisation or individual that chooses not to support any charity.

My son goes to Bohunt, I am pleased they don't do children in need. If my son wished to raise money for children in need I would suggest that we made cakes, christmas cards, knitted some toys etc and placed a table outside the door. Advertise the event and invite our neighbours/ friends to buy them. You know its NOT down to the schools to organise these events.

Hello. Last week my son was disappointed that the school didn't support children in need and he has said his friends felt the same, however today he has come home saying that this week the school will be supporting MOVEMBER. Another very worthy cause. Lets let the school and the kids in it decide what causes they support.

I think the problem lies in the fact that CIN has been so over-hyped by the BBC. The huge amount of airtime devoted to promoting it means that it feels almost obligatory to take part.
I am sure that if CIN simply had collection boxes placed in shops, schools etc there would be far less interest in it. The truth is, it isn't actually about donating to charity, it's about dressing up, doing silly things and generally having fun (and maybe getting a mention on TV). Nothing wrong with any of those things per se. But to suggest that the charitable giving is the primary purpose is wrong, because it so clearly isn't. The OP's outrage says it all. All Bohunt pupils had the same opportunity to donate to CIN as anyone else; what they didn't have was a day of fun at school - and that's what the OP was beefing about.
Personally, I find it all rather distasteful and therefore choose not to support it.

When it comes to raising money for charity Bohunt has done a very good (and willing) job in our experience.
My two children, both at Bohunt, asked the school if they would support them in holding a charity event in aid of Brain Tumour Research, in memory of their Father who died from a brain tumour.
The school were very happy to get involved and made every effort to help the children make it a success, they contacted the local press and even offered to repeat the process every year.
I understand they are also raising money for the Philippines during Movember.
Just like us individuals and families, organisations can't be expected to support each and every charity that exists all of the time and just like we do, each organisation should be able to choose what they will or won't support without being vilified for their choices whatever they my be.
