OMG! Trees in the Square
- Dawn Hoskins (5th Oct 2008 - 15:35:56)

What has happened in the Square?

The silver birch outside the Nationwide has been sawn in half, limbs off the old oak have been sawn off??

Please tell me there is an innocent explanation….

On getting home, it occurred to me that the damage may have been caused by strong winds. However, on further investigation these limbs have definitely been removed with a saw – and in the middle of the night?!

One very large limb off the old oak
One smaller, but still substantial limb from the oak near the bus stop
The silver birch by the Nationwide has been cut down at waist height

Due to this happening at night, with debris strewn all over the pavements etc, I can’t see any other explanation than wanton destruction by someone with a chainsaw. I believe that the old oak in front of the pub is a protected tree, in which case this is elevated from anti social behaviour to a criminal offence.

I do hope someone can shed some light on this.

I haven't been to the Square lately, but this all sounds very sinister if done in the middle of the night!!

Has anyone been knocking on doors selling logs in the area?

Dawn

I hardly think somebody has been out with a chainsaw overnight? Don't they make a noise? I saw somebody yesterday in the Square doing something, probably late morning, but do you know what, I assumed he was following an order from somebody in the know, higher up the chain from me, and that quite frankly it wasn't any of my business to worry about. Why leap to conculsions that foul play is involved, there is probably a perfectly simple explaination and most probably had something to do with the bad weather. I don't mean to be rude, but I am getting tired of everyone assuming there is a conspiracy theory operating in Liphook or that we have a chainsaw (silent ones) wielding group of operatives doing their worst in the village at night(really??)

They have probably just done it to annoy you.

I have no doubt that someone will shed some light on the issue in due course. You may just have to wait.

This must be vandalism because at 10:00am yesteday the silver birch was toppled on its side, cut at the trunk. A professional tree surgeon would not have done this.

My husband went through the square early on Sunday morning, and reported that there were a number of branches around. It probably was due to the horrendous wind over night and in the early morning. It would be too shocking to think (like Kitty highlighted), that wanton destruction had taken place.

All I know is that on Saturday the trees were in tact, yet on Sunday morning they had been hacked.

the limbs had been cut in a way that no qualified person would have done.

The branches were across the pavements.

the limbs had most definately been sawn.

Well - what little faith I had in human nature, has just been blown out.

According to the 'street' a person (s), left the Dragon, took a saw and attacked the trees.

I hope that however this story got about, the police have been made aware and are on the case.

Well, he must have muscles like Popeye to do that!!!

When a village pub is allowed to have a 2am kicking out time things like this will happen, not trying to be a killjoy but what a nightmare for anyone who lives in the square.

Dawn

You have my apologies, I cannot believe what I have read in the Herald today? Do you think it was pre-meditated? I am totally disgusted and hope they find the culprit(s) soon.
