Carnival Fancy Dress
- jane (26th Oct 2013 - 15:19:51)
Did anyone else think that the fancy dress this morning was a bit of a joke? There were people that put a lot of effort into their costume but didnt come anywhere in their catergory?!
I think it should have stayed at Bohunt where everyone could be judged together rather than being cramped in a small hall and judging taking place in different rooms!

Oh Jane, I am very disappointed that you felt this way about the Fancy Dress Competition. Perhaps you could call me and we can discuss your views, and how you think we can improve the situation next year. Karen Feeney 01428 723971

The dust has hardly settled and someone has to make all the good feeling for today’s events running well disappear.
Karen and crew you did a brilliant job, don't let someone choosing to air a grievance for not getting a prize cloud your wonderful accomplishments.
Jane you need to join the carnival committee and help to organise things if you feel that Bohunt's hall was better. This wasn't the time or place.

I actually thought that carnival was brilliant and myself and my family had a great day!
I was purely giving my opinion. And for your information, I didnt have anyone in the fancy dress, I went to show my support!

Seems like a bad case of poor loser! It was a lovely event, lots of smiling faces and my kids loved it (despite not winning).
Well done committee, another super carnival day

Did you not read the part where I said we had a brilliant day and that we were not in the fancy dress, just there to show support - no poor loser here thank you!

Thanks to everyone on the Carnival Committee and all the others who work so hard to make this annual event such a great success. You work hard through the day - outside in all the rain - we are lucky in this village to have a Carnival still being held. Jane why don't you join the Committee - they are very short of members and need volunteers to make the Carnival happen next year. It seems a great shame that the first posting on the Carnival is one of nit-picking complaint!!! It was a super evening.

A very disappointing post Jane. The committee work incredibly hard as volunteers with not enough support from the community in helping organise. They could spend their own time doing things for themselves, but choose to do this for the benefit of all. Rather than sniping, join the effort.

Myself and my family feel very proud to be part of a village community that hosts such a wonderful event as the carnival. Well done to Karen and her team - you work so incredibly hard without much credit so thank you.

As you say Minder, everyone is entitled to an opinion and we are all posting our opinions about the original postings. If you are not keen on getting feedback then don't enter the forum!

would have been nice if the residents of the avenue and avenue close had been informed, yet again couldn\'t get in my drive, always something going on at the schools, can deal with pick up and drop off in the week, but why should we have to have every night and every weekend with something going on.

I think to defend Jane that the point she is making is that if for example there is a prize for best overall costume you would need all the costumes together to compare them. You can't remember some from one room and the compare to some in another room.
But as usual in come the comments of sour grapes / bad attitude etc. that seem to exemplify some Liphook residents.

- sarah (28th Oct 2013 - 09:20:23)
well done Karen and all the carnival committee, it was a great carnival, Im thinking maybe what Jane meant was what Richard said, I had no one competing but went along as I always do to show support to the community, but it was very cramped and uncomfortable and as all the competitors were in different rooms I did not see many of the competitors, when it was held at Bohunt, yes it was poorly attended, so what was different this year ?
I'm thinking maybe the children were encouraged more to participate, as it was being held at their school, which was clearly too small to stage the event !
So why not the same sort of encouragement every year, regardless of where the event is held, its only once a year and it is one of the main things that bring the community together in great spirits, and its these children which are part of the future of our brilliant carnival !

Re: Carnival Fancy Dress
- Karen Feeney (28th Oct 2013 - 10:07:51)
Dear All
Now that a few people have commented on this thread I felt the need to clarify the situation with regard to the Fancy Dress at the Infant School on Saturday.
We decided to move the event from Bohunt as it has been so poorly attended in the last few years. The access to the hall at Bohunt is not great and the hall was too large for the number of people that were attending.
Together with the headteacher at the Infant/Junior School and the PTA's from both schools we organised an event which we felt was much more exciting for the children and included things such as apple bobbing, lucky dip and a craft table as well as the fancy dress competition and a carved pumpkin competition. We advertised the event through the schools and in all honesty, had no idea what kind of response we were going to get.
We had over 90 children come to the school on Saturday...a huge number compared to the last few years and I for one am completely delighted that they came. We were therefore faced with a space dilemma and thinking on my feet, I decided to move each of the children's categories to classrooms for judging. This meant the judges could spend time looking at the costumes and talking to the children. The overall judges moved around the classrooms to make sure they had seen everyone. The Committee choice was made by the 4 committee members that were attending the event.
I think all of the children enjoyed themselves and that makes me happy. I hope they all come back next year when we will perhaps move a few of the activities to other parts of the school to allow more space in the hall.
If we want the Carnival to continue for our children and our children's children we need to start generating interest from them now. Being part of our community here in Liphook is very special and I for one am determind to ensure the tradition of the Liphook Carnival continues long after I have toddled off this earth. I apologise if anyone felt the event was not organised properly or if your parking was disrupted for the morning, we are volunteers, we do this work because we want to make a difference to our village and we all have limited time and resources (ie. people) to complete the massive amount of tasks that we have to undertake to get the Carnival organised.
Thanks to everyone that came, I really hope the children of our village enjoyed getting in the mood for the Carnival and that they fondly remember for years to come, how they spent their childhood here in our very unique corner of Hampshire.

Thanks Karen for what you do to organise the carnival
we didn't go to the fancy dress this year but sounds like it was very well attended and fun for the children

- Janet (28th Oct 2013 - 18:36:51)
Karen,
Would it make things easier if there was a requirement to register in order to enter the fancy dress, or indeed the carnival floats competition?
Without pre-registration it must be almost impossible for you and the other organisers to have any idea of how many people will turn up, how long an event will take, what provisions need to be made etc etc.
Is there a reason why people don't have to enter in advance? I wouldn't have thought entering was something anyone would do on the spur of the moment, as it obviously takes a lot of planning and effort.
Sorry, I don't mean this as a criticism, just thought it would make the volunteers' jobs a bit easier.

- Lucy (29th Oct 2013 - 12:56:34)
I think that if the same effort went into the organising as it was this year then Bohunt would be the better option, bohunt would then not seem too small. No one has said that it wasnt good, it was a great turn out. It was just far too cramped! And, how could evdryone be judged fairly.
My son won the Carnival Committee's prize and I still think that it didnt quite work this year. So dont think there are any sour grapes etc, just people quick to assume!
I think next year should be back at bohunt, and the same advertising in place as this year....then we will be on to a winner :-)
Im already planning my , little Oompa Loompas costume for next year ;-)

I personally want to say a big thank you to everyone who was involved in organising the fancy dress comp and the carnival. It was great to see the whole community support the competition at the school and I hope that it remains well supported for many years to come.
I agree that the large number of entrants mean that Bohunt school should be the preferred venue for next year.

Nobody came to Bohunt. That is why we moved it. We did the same advertising this year, both in the local papers and at the Infant and Junior school (ie. texts and a flyer). So from that I conclude that people wanted to go to the school their child attends. I would love more space, but I bet if we move back to Bohunt we will have less children again.

Reading the various opinions and comments on this subject there are lots of valid points put across but the general consensus seems to be that the event was not "a bit of a joke" but a much appreciated and fun filled part of what was an excellent carnival day.
Thank you to all the organisers for putting in so much effort for the benefit of our village
