Trick or treating
- Sarah (24th Oct 2013 - 22:32:59)

Being new to the area, I was wondering if children trick or treat in Liphook? I know many people aren't into it (and that's fine), but I'd like to know if it's worth getting some goodies in.

Thanks

Hi Sarah

Each year we get a few more trick or treaters on the night . Not sure how many will be out this year because Halloween is on Thursday but we will be ready....so get in the treats!!!

For anyone that wishes not to be disturbed by incessant doorbell ringing next Thursday night, here is a great poster;

I think it depends where in the village you live! The Avenue is very popular with the children, but I live further down Longmoor Rd, and never get anyone!
Incidentally, have you seen the hanging burnt body and the skull, just past the Avenue corner with Longmoor Rd, at Doverhay? (I think that's what it's called!) It did make me jump the other day lol!

We live in the maltings off haslemere road and get lots of kids trick n treating, so you'll need lots of treats if you live this way.
We also have an unwritten rule that kids are only allowed to knock on doors with pumpkins out, so you'll also need one of them and a candle. Enjoy :)

We run out of sweets every year and also have an unwritten rule about only going to houses with a pumpkin!

We seem to have adopted trick or treating from America. I don't approve of it in its current form.

I believe it's derived from the old guising tradition, when children would bring treats to neighbours or perform jokes or tricks to entertain them.

An American friend I had about 25 years ago was bemoaning how commercial Halloween had become in the USA back in the 70s and 80s. Now it seems we have allowed the same thing to happen here.

Originally, the treats were given BY the children, not TO them - and the 'tricks' were the alternative, if the recipient preferred not to have the edible treat. There was never any mischief involved or expected. Children used to spend time making little sweets and cakes, then visit their neighbours to give them away.

What a shame it's all so commercialised nowadays.

As said above our estate off the Haslemere road has a strong trick or treating tradition but only to houses that display lit pumpkins.

Once all of my sweets have gone I just turn out the lights and candles.

Hear hear janet !!
The whole notion of halloween severely distresses a great many of our elderly or vulnerable community, and is one of the principal reasons the Police have had to classify this specific period as potential anti social behaviour.
Who on earth wants eggs and other detritus thrown over the front of their houses because of a date in the calendar and because they're too frightened to answer their front door?
I do sincerely wish more parents would act more responsibly and appreciate the unsettling impact the whole evening potentially causes to the overwhelming majority who don't and won't answer their doors. Many others agree with the wendys post completely - please restrict your groups door knocking to those premises that 'advertise' their willingness to participate - with their pumpkin outside or similar?

Thanks all,

I too will be carving my pumpkin tonight, putting some make up on tomorrow (zombie or death mask - not quite decided) and will hopefully be amused by some appropriately dressed ghosts and ghouls!!

For those who join in - enjoy and for those who don't wish to, the poster previously posted looks like a really good idea.

Happy All Hallows Eve to one and all - stay safe :)
